It doesn't advance timing per se, but the stock timing and boost levels create a lot of knock, especially on ACN 91 fuel. So adding 100 octane will make more power as the ECU will be able to run the commanded timing in the ignition map instead of pulling timing due to knock.
It's been a while since I touched completely stock roms but I vaguely remember back in the pre modified rom days (circa 2007ish) that the stock ECU WAS able to add timing until it hit knock and would then back off. Many folks turned this feature off since it made tuning inconsistent and not sure if it ever made it into some of the later modified roms that most folks use now.
OT it's not suddenly going to go from Bruce Banner to the hulk so don't do that if you expect that to work.
