Front balance shaft out of phase questions
Front balance shaft out of phase questions
Hello guys,
My timing belt, waterpump, balancer belt etc. recently got replaced by a 'mechanic'. I went on my first drive yesterday and the car started vibrating/resonating like crazy from 3500/4000 RPM. I did some research and immediately came across front balance shaft issues.
Assuming my front balance shaft is 180 degrees out of phase, everything has to come off again to reset the balance shaft. Obviously I'm going to attempt to do this myself this time as I don't trust this 'mechanic'.
My questions are:
- Is it possible to keep the timing belt in place, take the tension off, rotate the front balance shaft/oil pump sprocket to where it should be and put tension on again?
- Can I even reuse the timing belt? It's brand new obviously, but I'm not sure if it's fine to be reused after having to take it off again.
Thanks in advance!

Yes you should line all marks at TDC, Pin the tensioner (hopefully your mechanic knew how to set tension as this should allow you to just repin it), pull the eccentric bolt and adjust the shaft as needed. Then just make sure you retension the belt properly. The belt can be reused.

! I bought some tools (BGS 8530) to help with this job and it includes a grenade pin, so I should be able to repin it. Thanks again!

However now I'm trying to reset tension on the hydraulic tensioner. I use the special tool with 2 pins to put tension on the pulley to where I can freely pull the grenade pin in and out and the tighten it, which works perfectly. All timing marks line up, spun the engine a few times untill they line up again, waited for +/- 5 minutes, tried to put the grenade pin in and out again which it did, but after waiting for another 10/15 minutes it didn't go in all the way any more. We've redone the timing tension part 2 times now and both times had the same outcome. What can we possibly be doing wrong?
In all video's I see they suggest to wait +/- 15 minutes and try to put the grenade pin back in again, which it should. The belt has tension but I'm not 100% sure we've got it right.
Thanks in advance!
