05 Lancer Evo 8 - Whining Noise
Looking for some opinions on a whining noise coming from what sounds like my drivetrain. I'm skeptical that it's death whine (maybe just hoping it's not) but am new to evos and their noises.
The sound is there on acceleration/deceleration. Gets higher pitched as you increase speed. Best capture is in video 3 below.
Car Details:
05 Lancer Evo 8 MR w/ 91k Miles
6 speed transmission (JDM swap)
Freshly rebuilt (approx. 300 miles total) stage 2 Sheptrans ACD transfer case w/ Wavetrac LSD
Freshly rebuilt (approx. 300 miles total) 12 plate Sheptrans rear diff
New DSS level 0 front axles
Used DSS aluminum driveshaft
ACD pump relocated to the trunk

Listened to all the sound clips and just not hearing anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes picking up these transient noises is tough? I would just make sure all your drivetrain fluids are proper & if they need changing do that & run it as is.
If there's a problem it will certainly raise its head and let you know

For what it's worth, I had it up at RRT in CT for some work and they noted that it sounded like death whine.
How the hell can it be death whine when your whole drivetrain is freshly built and only has 300 miles on it. You better watch out for these shops cause if your not careful they’ll tear your pockets up.
If you are worried, you can always do a fluid change on the transmission and transfer case to see if any metal shavings show up. There are instances where a freshly built transfer case or transmission will fail due to the gear mesh being setup incorrectly. Since the rear diff and TC are mated with the drive shaft, it's actually very hard to tell which one is broken. Here is what the transfer case death whine sounds like:
