Question Intakes!

Is it worth it to get an intake for my Evo? I put an AEM intake on my friends eclipse yesterday and it sounds awesome. Paired with the exhaust the eclipse is definately faster, but the Evo is an entirely different car. If it is worth it what brand did should I go with? I was looking at a K&N Short RAM and the AEM short RAM intakes.

Some report worse performance with the intake system if not properly tuned for it...

werd youll get better results if your evo is tuned to run with an open element intake.i used to have the aem for my evo but its not worth having it here in cali with all the hassles from the cops.stocker's already good as it is maybe a drop-in to enhance it a bit.

I built one of the guide baffles floating around the forums..... As for my butt dyno, the car feels like its pulling slightly harder above 5000 rpms... I need to hook up my data logger and see just how much colder the air is going in.... Very simple mod and can be removed whenever you want, Personally I don't tihnk it should be left in durring the rain though, and i'm going to test it in a car wash today hopefully no water can enter the element...

btw, i'm using a drop in knn

I have the AEM.
Most intakes of this type on the evo tend to change the MAF readings so that
the car will run a bit lean in the mid to upper rpm range.
I had mine tuned to compensate.

I do not think that intakes like this add any significant HP.
I added mine so that I can enjoy the BOV sound without going VTA.
If this isn't important to you, then a K&N drop in is the way to go.

Go with a drop-in unless you plan on getting some tuning to compensate for the lean condition. I grabbed an EMS for my problem (car would die out around 3000 rpm) but you can get something smaller like a piggy-back if you wanna do it yourself.

About the water in the intake, I've had mine for about a month now, quite a bit of rain in GA, 2 trips to panama, and quite a few car washes and no water has even touched my filter yet.

here's my take on intakes...

Raced my friends WRX with HKS-Ti when i was stock from like 60mph to 120, average win for me was like half a car...

Added an HKS 30th Hi-Power exhaust and HKS-RS intake...after about 3 weeks of driving i felt a huge power increase...especially high end, however the car does run super rich (judging from the black smoke at redline shifts). Raced him again after he got downpipe, headers, uppipe, UTEC and an intake and only lost by about a car going from 30 - 130. If i get this thing tuned i think i'll be able to keep up with him if not beat him. Either way, big gains from two little mods on my Evo.
