Ok. Define bad clutch habits on an Evo. What do people THINK they should and shouldn't do while driving to prolong clutch life.

The clutch is not bad, it is just designed differently from most other cars. You can't slip it like other clutch but it has strong holding power after engagement. Most other cars can be launch at 3-4k rpm, the Evo will just crawl a little and smell bad. I used to launch my other cars at 3-4 k in my last 15 years of driving, but I realized I had to change my driving style with the Evo.

spinhouse, how many miles were on your Evo when you purchased it? What type of break in procedure did you do with your Evo?

yeah i too came from the 350z and at 13k miles... i've had not even a slight clutch problem... i've even done a few 4k drop and no problem.. then again it is RWD so less stress on the clutch.. more tire spin

I'm not sure how people are burning their clutches out. I'm at 13k and it still holds as good as the day I bought it.

I don't know if anyone tried this before but how about we start keeping track on how many people have clutch problems and those who don't(yet). Maybe compare build dates, mileage, vehicle use, length of ownership, driving habits, etc. $0.02.

I'll start...

Build Date:5/03
Length of Ownership:5 months
Driving Habits:normal, mostly 4K-5K shifts(sometimes higher) , never launched, never engine brake
Vehicle Use:daily driver, mostly stop and go traffic.
Mileage:4700

...as of now, no slipping yet.

Over 8,000 miles so far, 2,500 of them modded, with no issues. I've done a few poor launches that have resulted in some major stink but still the clutch grips fine. I've never had it slip when fully engaged under ANY sort of load condition. I must have one of the good ones.

In contrast, contrary to what others have reported, my Audi S4 with chip & exhaust (~250-260whp) would start to slip under WOT the moment RPMs hit the torque peak. So in the case of the Audi, I must have gotten a bad one.

another difference between the 350z and the evo besides the AWD/RWD is the clutch engagement point.. the evo engages much quicker, which makes it easier to burn the clutch....

Is there anyway to change the engagement point? Mine is up top and I don't like it at all. I prefer somewhere in the middle.
