overfilled my oil! What to do??

Hey guys,

I have a 2003 Evo, and I apparently fell for the same thing that many others have - I followed the manual, and put in about 5.5 qts of oil in my car during my oil change today. After doing that, I checked out my dipstick and about freaked out! I checked the boards here, and found out that many of you put in about 4.75 qts, and it seems to work fine. So, I went out and drained my oil a bit (I took out maybe .25 to .50 quarts). I'm not sure if that's enough, but I'm hoping someone here can tell me. Will it hurt if I'm running a little too much oil?? If 4.75 quarts is right, I figure I'm still at least .25 too high. What do you guys think??

A "little" too much oil won't really hurt anything. As long as it's not a lot. Heck, mine came from the dealer, with an xtra quart poured in for me. Aren't the nice. Goons!

Check the dipstick and see if it's in the operational range, or just above. If it is don't stress it. If it's way over the top line on the dipstick you may want to drain a little more.

Did your manual say 5.5 quarts? Mine did not; it said 4.75 and I used 5. Two changes now, couple thousand miles, no problems.

Hope that helps a little!

Shouldn't be a problem. Next time I suggest you put in 4Q and then check the oil dip stick and add as necessary. This is what I do all the time.

Yeah, my manual says 4.8 for the pan, .32 for the oil cooler, and .32 for the filter. I DID replace the filter, and assume that the oil cooler just drains from gravity. I KNOW that I put in exactly 5.5 quarts, and I KNOW I drained out a little less than .5...I also KNOW that let my car off the jack to make sure that all the oil drained out, but when I pull out the dipstick, it still reads a decent amount above the top notch. My dipstick also has oil streaking up a few inches higher than the top notch, so I have the feeling that I can only trust the dipstick so much! I have the feeling that there's a trail of oil up the dipstick hole or something...

the trail is nothing. jus check both sides. its probably from the wen you pulled the stick out n jus made a streak. as long at it doesnt over exceed the limit your ok. you wouldnt want to drown your engine.

That's odd. My dipstick is pretty clear. Not trying to insult you, but did you make sure to pull the dipstick out, clean it, re-insert it slowly, and finally remove it slowly? If you just pull it out and read it there will allways be oil way higher than the top line. Again, no insult, just trying to figure out why it shows so high.

Regardless, if you are fairly certain there is ~5 qarts (+/- .25 quarts), you are completly safe. If you're still concerned, take the loss and get 5 more quarts of oil, and drain and refill it. Just don't change the filter since you allready did it.

No offense taken siantjab. I actually kind of felt dumb asking this question in the first place, but I've changed my own oil for over 10 years now, and NEVER had a problem overfilling - you would think you could trust the manual!! I'm betting if I just let the oil settle overnight or something, my dipstick will read a lot more clearly - it's probably because I've checked it like 20 times in the past couple of hours!! Well, lesson learned...Next time I'll put in maybe 4.5 quarts, and add from there!!

Well guys...apparently you should listen to the boards here, and not the manual!! I took it into a Jiffy Lube this morning, and they removed a little oil for me. They figured they removed about 1/2 quart of oil, and now it's perfectly at the top notch. So it seems like 4.75 quarts is the closest guess I can make. To give some credit to Jiffy Lube, they did that for me, no charge...I know who I'm using for my Winter oil changes!

the oil cooler has a separate plug to take off if you really want to make sure that all the dirty oil has came out.but its not really necessary to do so.just put about 4.5 qt then let it idle for maybe 15-30 seconds or so then turn it off.then add a liittle bit more till its enough.imo its better this way so the oil has moved around the internals not just sitting there till topping off.

Don't over fill at all.

Nothing personal but I respectfully disagree. The 4g63 is prone to blowing out dipsticks under overfilled/high rpm conditions. Do a search and you'll see it has happened to a lot of folks, including the DSM crowd. With overfilled oil, you risk foaming your oil and/or creating conditions that would appear to be blow-by at first glance. I have read that the 4g63 oil gallies are not super efficient and overfilling oil, even a little bit could risk a very messy clean up job with oil gets all over your engine bay. I actually err on the underfilling side - eg. the lower line on the dipstick.

i put in 4.5 quarts and then started the motor so let it move around because the dipstick said it was full. then after it ran for a min or two i checked the dipstick again and it went down so I added the .5 left over. seems okie dokie

I just changed my oil. I added 5 quarts but did NOT fill the filter before I put it on (my mistake, but it actually worked out fine). I checked the oil after running the car for a few minutes and it is just a tad over the full mark. I wouldn't trust the manual in regards to the oil quantity for the filter since Mitsubishi's and the aftermarkets filters are smaller than the ones the factory put on the car.

A little off topic, but when I changed the oil, there was no crush washer on my plug. The dealer did the first oil change and it looks like they forgot to put it on!

I just did my oil change today & used only 4 liters of oil. Checked the dipstick & it was on the 2nd line w/out starting the engine yet. After starting the engine for 5 min. it went down to to just a little bit higher on the 1st line of the dipstick. Should I add .5 liters more?
Dont you have to check your oil after starting the engine so it can circulate inside the engine?

whoa whoa, i assume by liters u mean quarts and if you start your engine for a while it generally does lower the oil reading on the dipstick since the oil is gettin run around your engine... i dont kno if u should put the whole .5 quarts in, but i would pour in until the dipstick reads that it's about full.
