Review of ATS triple carbon clutch....
Review of ATS triple carbon clutch....
I have had this clutch for about 3000 miles and I love everything about it minus a few things:
Pros:
1. It is a little stiffer than a stock clutch but it has a nice pedal pressure where you can drive it anywhere and not have to worry. Traffic, city, whatever...
2. It will probably never burn up unless I beat the living crap out of it for the next couple of years.
3. The clutch has great capacity for high HP. I'm at about 425-450 and it never gives me any problems with slipping or letting lose. No race gas testing yet…
Cons: (for me),
1. I can't launch this clutch whatsoever. I can feather it a little in high RPM’s, start to let it grab and then when I let it out it bogs like crazy and no launch. I'm keeping the rpm's up, I've slowly let it out, I feel like I have tried everything and can't get it to work properly. I wanted this clutch to be able to slip in a race. Also when it does grab in upper RPM's it will make a clunk sound from the rear like the rear diff. wasn't engaged. Kind of like the sound on a 4X4 when you lock everything in? I'm lost and need some help with this one, any suggestions
I was told it might be wheel hop, but I have never felt any before to know what it is.
2. I have custom upper intercooler piping and the slide from the clutch sometimes rubs my pipe making a metal scratching noise. I can even feel it in the pedal sometimes. I need a new upper intercooler pipe anyway because the shop where I had my turbo kit installed did such a hack job on it that it rubs all over the place. I know that it was changed to a push type and there is more moving parts on the exterior so maybe it's that?
The shop used stainless for the part that comes out of my intercooler, then welded mild-steel for the part where it passes by my motor (which is all RUSTED ALREADY and looks like crap!!), and finished up using a 90 degree bend left over from a Nissan 350Z turbo project. I will never go back there and recommend everyone to stay away from there as much as possible.
3. It does rattle when the clutch is pressed in. I haven't heard many other double/triple clutches but this one you can really hear. To an untrained ear it sounds like you have lose stuff all over your car but to someone who knows what to listen for it will scare them away
There are some more pros and cons that I will add later as I drive it more. I’ll keep everyone informed as I go...

Good Review. I was gonna get this clutch for the same reason as you, for slipping in a race situation. I decided to go with the cusco clutch (twin plate semi/ carbon, installing next friday) instead because of the good reviews its gotten and the modest power levels I'm making (430hp, about 380whp, tuning next friday).

Make sure you butt weld the coller or your throw out bearing will pop off and you will have to pay for another clutch install.
Woops you are getting cusco not exedy. Sorry my bad.

You dont need to butt weld anything, and yes the Exedy and Cuzco are the same design, like stock. The ATS is a push type conversion that has extra linkages that extend out of the tranny and can cause clearance problems. Most of the problems with the throw out clips breaking were due to poor installations and not bad products.

Exactly the type drivability input/comments I was looking for.
Are you saying that this clutch is not working for you in a drag racing launch situation? Can you describe you launch in more detail?
Please post more of your experiance with this clutch when you have a chance.

I was slipping the clutch a lot at lights trying to get it heated up, plus there is crazy traffic so it wasn't hard to do. I first tried a roll out at like 3500RPM (from a stop) and it went really well. It engaged perfect and I had to get ready because my second gear come very fast. Nice launch, but probably not for a good 60ft at the track. Then I did a 4000prm slip which really launched nicely but I had that sound come once my clutch was fully let out? It's that same sound I described from above, a cluncking, jerking engagement sound? Still not sure what the hell that is. Also when I went to get some gas and/or stopped at a light I coul smell clutch... I don't know if that is a bad thing because it's a triple carbon and carbon isn't supposed to smell like that or what. Can anyone elaborate to help me out a little. Is a carbon clutch supposed to give off a smell or do you think it was just because I had it sitting for a week without driving it and something got heated up and gave off a smell?
