EVO = Awesome but noisy
EVO = Awesome but noisy
I just finished puting the first 100 miles on the new baby. What an incredable performance bargan.
BUT..... the drive train is very loud. This is from a car starting with 4 miles, and there is a very noticeable, speed dependent gear whine (I'm sure its the transfer case) There is also a lot of drivetrain lash (for lack of a better way to put it) it feels like a GSX with 150k miles. Normal - Not Normal. I've done a search and couldn't find anyone describing what the car sounds like/feels like when brand new. Any input would be very welcome.
BTW, this is an 04 car that rolled off the truck yesterday. The dealer has a couple of 03 cars still on the lot. I think I'll go by tomorrow and insist they let me drive one for my own peace of mind.

2k miles in about 6 weeks of ownership and from the first drive it's made an audible noise when decelerating in gear with the clutch out if you're above 3k rpm it's very noticeable.
a lot of previous posts say this is normal. alright, I believe them. but some older posts though say that all AWD cars do it. um, no. my Impreza did not do it.
anyone that's not hearing anything at all might have their stereo cranked or an aftermarket exhaust installed.

I have a new 2003 I purchased a month ago with 180 miles and I honestly thought there was something wrong with it. It was loud! Well, I drove the normal slow break in period and took it back to the dealer because the clutch began souding like the Throw-out Bearings were going bad. When I got the car back with a clean bill of health from the dealer, the car seemed much quieter.
Mitsubishi Corp sent a memo to the dealer describing the Evo..........."The Evolution is provided with larger tires and High Performance hardware to give the driver the expected High Performance results. Engineering was the FIRST PRIORITY and SOUND DEADNING was SECOND."
I think Mitsubishi just told us if we want quiet, get a BMW but............If you want to Crush BMWs' turn your Evos' radio up and GET ON THE GAS!
By the way, It was very nice to let the owner of a new 540i listen to the Whistle of my Turbo as he TRIED to get away. Probably a tune he would not like to here again from a 4 Banger that cost 40K Less

a new one would've been 545. an older 540, even a sport with six speed manual, is only 282 HP pushing around almost 3800lb. telling old from new is easy-- if it was butt ugly it's new.
btw $40k more gets you an M5, not 540

Everybody has the same noises. I beat the crap out of mine on a daily basis and the drivetrain holds. The clutch is an obvious problem, but with a Cusco twin-disc no problems. I say again, I beat the crap out of my car daily. I didn't but it to baby it.

Try downshifting into 4th on the highway, gas it and then let off the gas, that gear box (transfer case or dif) growls like the hounds from hell.
Put another 100 miles on her today. Awesome. The gear noise actually seems to have quieted down a bit. Even with a heat index of 110 the mid range grunt is unbeliveable, and I'm still feathering the throttle as the boost starts to come on. Can't wait for one of those cool, crisp winter mornings.
i found the stock slutch has a lotta chatter, which isn't very typical. i also found you have to shift really fast cuz the revs drop pretty quick in the evo (pretty light flywheel).
and exhaust will improve the noise problem, it'll most likely make the engine sounds less "mechanical" and hopefully get ridda some other undesireable noises by drowning them out.
