My TeamRip transfer case experience
Sup,
As some of you know I sent my transfer case out to Team Rip because it was making a horrible whining noise and was confirmed to be going bad by Turbo Trix.
Well, I had a few options at this point:
1. Return my car to stock and take it to the Dealership for repair (Keep in mind I JUST had 3200 of work done including a clutch, cams, headstuds, injectors, AEM EMS, test pipe and some other stuff so taking all that stuff out would be about 1000)
2. Buy a new transfer case from Mitsu for 1800-2300. (I didn't want to do this because it was only 1 bad gear)
3. Find someone to fix it. This is where Team Rip stepped in.
I contacted Jon at TeamRip and he told me that they have been building transfer cases and trannies for AWD DSM's for years and that he may be able to fix the problem for less than 500. I decided to give this a shot because even if he couldn't fix it all I would have to pay for is 1 hour labor and shipping. So I brought my car to turbo trix, had them drop the transfer case, and mailed it out to MI (if any of you have been to TT lately your definatly seen my white evo chillin in the back for about 3 weeks).
First let me say that Jon's knowledge of transmissions and their components far exceeded any of my expectations. I know alot about cars but the stuff he was saying even baffled me at times. His professionalism is top notch and he always answered my questions and then some.
When Jon received my transfer case he went right to work. He found that the ring gear was showing signs of abnormal wear. This wear was strange because the pinion wasn't showing any signs of abuse or low fluid. Jon told me that the some of the components in the tranfers case were not up to the task of hold alot of power and hes looking for a fix. For about 2 week after that Jon was searching for solutions on how to fix this problem but was not sure if my gear could be saved. Today I received a call stating that my tansfer case is back together and is spinning fine (we don't know how its gonna hold up when power is put to it). I should be getting it back in a few days to try it out at the DSM shootout.
Jon said if your transfer case is already bad then fixing it is a hit or miss process depending on how severe it is BUT he developed a way to ensure that a good transfer case won't go bad by treating the gears in a special way (like cryo or nickle coat). I would suggest Team Rip to anyone looking for a better performing transfer case. The final cost was about 300 shipped back to me.

Even if my TC has been making 4th gear decel/banshee sounds sound since I first got it can I still get it treated? This is my 3rd transfer case, so it would be nice to have a quiet one!

By treating the gears in a special what ?
Nice to hear your gonna be back on the road bro, that was a fun lil ride at the last BBQ =)
Thx's for the info. Hooptie. Sounds like you saved some money.
On the hit and miss its my understanding they just "cryo' your gears, right ? Are did they replace the ring gear?
Either way its worth the try, much better then spending 2300.00 like I did on the Rs Transfercase.
Keep us info. on how it performs and how its holding up.

How do you guys think that the gears look?
This is what Jon from TeamRip had to say about them:
"I'm not happy with the surface finish of the ring gear.
There is something terribly wrong with these parts; either the heat
treat or the pressure angles aren't correct. I'll have to do a little
more work on them to know for sure.
Thanks,
