My Greddy Type-S Experience

I currently have a Vishnu 0++ setup, I call it ++ because I have an HKS intake and a Test Pipe beyond the standard 0+ equipment.

Anywho... I installed my Greddy Type-S (Thanks DerekW) BOV yesterday. It is single spring modded already. Some observations I made....

It takes less force to manually open (push the valve open with your finger) the Type-S than the stock Plastic BOV. I'm assuming since the diaphram area on the Type-S is larger, this doesn't matter since more boost will be holding the valve closed. BTW, if I try to adjust the valve any tighter I get compressor surge.

If I semi floor the car (~15lbs of boost) and quickly close the throttle I get surge, and randomly, it has only happend a handful of times. At very low boost closing the throttle I get a whistle and no surge, and at WOT and a quick throttle close I get no surge.

This is the thing that bothers me the most....

In 5th gear at ~55MPH, if I start to open the throttle to the point where you'd just hear the turbo starting to spool, then reduce (not close) the throttle to maintain speed I get a constant whistle from the BOV, like it is stuck partially open. This doesn't matter since I'm not on boost, but I never really noticed the stock valve do it. It may very well have done the same thing, but since the Greddy valve has such a distinct whistle I hear it much more.

On a positive note, at full throttle and high RPMs my car holds boost fully until redline, and a quick stab of the throttle results in quicker boost response. Would I have bought it new for full price? No... but at a used price it was worth the small improvements it made.

Superhatch,
With the small spring removed, my Type S will only hold 19lbs. I tested mine (RRE version) with about every setting imaginable. Most if not all aftermarket BOVs will have slightly annoying characteristics such as surginess, worse idle, etc. With your mods, you should put the stock one back in. I still use my stocker a lot of the time because it holds boost fine to 22/23lbs and allows my car to idle perfectly and has better off-throttle characteristics.

Smog,

To be honest, I think my stock one was leaking pretty bad. It would never hold boost above 18lbs at redline, now I'm holding 20 to redline with the Greddy. I have to agree with you on the off-throttle charecteristics though. I'm getting my 1+ installed in 2 weeks, I'll bring both with me to the dyno and if we have time, I'll try to test both out. I doubt we'll have the time though. The NJ dyno day is pretty packed already.

What you are experiencing is pretty common with the type S, too loose, too tight, its one or the other.
