Got "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light

I was driving my car sunday morning at normal speeds (not aggresively at all) and the "service engine soon" warning light came on, and has stayed on. The car has 5300 miles on it, and has a catback, DP & hi-flow cat. these mods have been on the car for some time now and never had an issue. I do track the car, and in fact was on my way VIR at the time the light came on. the car is driving completely normally. does anyone what this could mean, before and take it to a dealer. i really want to avoid the dealer because i have very little confidence in them, and am afraid they will automatically point to my mods as the source of the problem.

Do a p0300 search

I can tell you what the problem is. You have the same thing I used to have a p0340 code "cat inefficiency" It will continue coming on until you get a o2 simulator or you put the stock cat back on. I got my o2 simulator from buschur racing and its a very easy install. Hope this helps. BTW.. I had my turbo back exhaust with high flow cat on for about 2500 miles before i ever got a p0 code.

Go to a Local Autozone, they will have a machine that can read "CEL" codes...i purchased one of these for my ever failing Ford Taurus (The other grocery getter)...

thanks for the feedback!

Cat inefficiency is P0420. Now that it is colder outside it takes longer for your highflow cat to warm up and hence you are more likely to get this CEL.

Check this thread out for a cheap fix that works.

There's no need in buying a code reader when you can buy something that will do soooooo much more.

Agreed, but don't buy one, borrow it briefly for no cost. I do it whenever I get a CEL. {thumbup}

This happen to my car once and my car is all stock. Is it the same problem? I have 30k miles at the time it came on.

bump

it may have to due with servicing your engine soon or something

JTB Nov 26, 2004 02:05 PM

It is unlikely that you have the same problem. It is probably due to a bad tank of gas but it might also be an indication of a more serious problem. Drop by the dealer and have them pull the code.

Earlier I busted a U-turn then I put the car in reverse and the car stalled. I tried to start the car, but it won't start. I waited for a bit then start it again then it slowly gain power again. All of a sudden the "service engine soon" light came on and stays on. I went back home and reset the ECU and start the car. Now the light is gone. hopefully it stay gone. :)
