Precision Dyno Tuned Buschur 20G Review

First of all, I would like to thank Vivid Racing for letting us use their dyno for these past couple of days... I would also like to thank all of the guys from Precision Dyno as well... They are great guys and they KNOW how to properly tune a car, as well as good customer service skills too...

Now on to the review... First of all, I have to say I am very dissapointed with the results of the TURBO, I am extremely pleased with my custom tune... My hp and torque curves are good, and the car does feel extremely fast... But on the dyno, you can tell how bad this turbo surges and robs power... Time after time, at 6000rpm, the turbo would surge and almost flatten out... My boost hits 1.8bar and drops to 1.4-1.5... From everything I have read, the stock turbo can do that just fine... There wasn't alot that could be done... Nick and the guys spent 4 hours on the dyno cranking away, but couldt get it to stop surging... After all the time spent, I put down 335hp and 300torque... Im going to continue to play with it to see if it can remedy the problem but I dont think ill have any luck... Everything considered, I feel like I wasted $1350 on a mod that is no better than my stock turbo... Ill have an update and ill scan my dyno sheet for everyone later...

i installed a friends 20 g who is getting tuned tonight. We test drove it and to be honnest, i wouldnt pay $15 for it. Surging would only fade away above 55-6000 or so. I put down 364 with the stock turbo and AEM. Maybe the new 9/20g will be better.....I was going to come up for the second day and hang, but was too tired........RRR

Dang, the truth reveals itself on the dyno.

A buddy of mine who owns an 05 MR is also trying to talk me out of the 20G upgrade whether it be a 20G-8 or a 20G-9.

He's trying to steer me towards getting the GT35R kit instead from AMS/Buschur/Shearer, ya know....go big or go home!!!

The EVO9 20G is the only way to go IMHO.

Is that this Turbo:

Perhaps an unmodified version of this Turbo is a better choice (one step above a 16.5 RS T.M.E.) ??

Right... the housing is bigger on the IX and no lightweight shaft or other internals. Seems the TME 6.5 with 20g mod is the best for 05 guys who don't want "clipped surge".....

I'm a firm believer in that stock turbo. It's so versatile - good for auto x as well as 1/4 racing. There are definitely a bunch of other mods to do before going with anything other than the stocker. In Precision's case, he's already got pretty much everything he needs - maybe injectors & a bigger FMIC, but he's hit all the essentials. Once you get to that point and it's still not enough power, then you may even consider some alchi-injection or some better engine management. I'd definitely save the big turbo for last.

Moral of the story = the Evo's stock turbo is awesome!

I beleive people will have the same problem with the evo-9 upgraded turbo... Time will tell... Regaurdless of the waste of money, my car is still really fast though ;)

I would have to agree and say that I am not very pleased w/ my 20G either, especially for the price. Numbers are in my sig., and I could probably hit those w/ the stock turbo. Surging sucks, spool is worse, and barely holds boost better than stock. I have just about every supporting mod under the sun, and I am tempted to go back to stock just to get back that 1000 rpm spool decrease :mitsu: I should have just spent the cash on alky and a tune.

hummm..... :( in that case my buddy is right, i should be looking at a 50 Trim, or even a GT35R

Sorry that the turbo is not working out for you. Thus far I have only seen great things with the BR 20G. The customer I tuned in Chicago made 369 whp and 359 tq at 24 psi on BR stage 3 - very impressive.

I would just suggest that you look at the other possible causes - e.g. boost leaks

Wow - suprized you would be saying that ! I thought it was a blast to drive and it has another 30 whp in it if you push the boost more.

I notice on turbos like this, that the person slinging then is always real shady with the dyno sheets. Take for example the white rabbit, he puts it on a AEM equipped car with a 4 inch intake, slaps it with 120 octane gas, tunes it and says, HEY LOOK 430hp!!

The problem is, the people who want these turbos normally don't want a full stand alone EMS, and don't have race gas on hand.

My thing is this, if someone has a great product, they post the dyno sheets with the quickness, I mean c'mon Buschur has a friggin dyno, and he couldn't hook the 20g to a stock car? He only ran numbers on his race car, and even though he disclosed the fact that it was a race car, it's still giving no indication of how it will run on the folks who are likely to buy it, which are mild bolt on evo's.

I'm sad that the 20g didn't make power, but I can't say I'm suprised. The local turbo shop here that I buy parts from was trying to make something like a 20g.....not so much that they were trying to use a reverse 20g wheel, but they were trying to use the stock housing with a different wheel. Just like the 20g it made marginal gains, so instead of slinging it out there, they scrapped it just like buschur should have.

If you're smart you can make great, cheap, and streetable power in this car, you just can't be afraid to look, or turn a wrench, or tune yourself =p
