2.1L Spun Rod Bearing

Well I built up a 4g64 using the Slowboy destroker kit. The engine ran for around 1k miles of just normal driving then the first night I really get on it all my rod bearings spun. I have no idea what I did wrong assembling the thing. I used all the parts slowboy sent me.

I checked out the rod bearings and it seems like they never seated correctly. Here are pictures of the rod bearings. Look at the top of the bearing...

THAT SUCKS!!! I remember talking to you about the build!! I am truly sorry for your misfortune. Was it poor quality parts? or what do you think caused it? low oil?

That sucks Joey ;/

No idea what happened thats why I posted. BTW I took all the rods a shop and they told me they could not fix them... I was told they were egg shapped. Could I have gotten defective rods?

Did you use ARP main studs?

Blue Evo 8 Jun 18, 2006 07:03 PM

how high did you rev the motor?

Did you do a proper break-in and change the oil when it should have been done?

Spaceball 1 Jun 18, 2006 07:17 PM

Stupid question but have to ask what assembly lube was used?

joeymia Jun 18, 2006 07:22 PM

ARP rod bolts came with the rods, motor was revved to only 7500, oil was changed like 3 times in those 1000 miles and not sure the type assembly lube i used... me and my dad built it in his garage.

BTW all the bearings were fine except for the rods. The head was perfectly fine as well. So I don't think I had oil starvation. What makes no sense is how the wear is uneven on the rod bearings.

Did you make SURE the back of the bearings were completely dry of oil? When you pre oil the bearings, if you get oil on the back of them, they can spin.

Funny you say that because Curt Brown's 2.1L just spun a bearing at the Subie vs EVO shootout.

are you 100% on this? I would love to see what his rod bearings look like... I called slowboy and emailed them and they were no help...

surface was very clean. the whole engine built with my dad there. he has been mechanic for 30+ years... His quote "They sold you a bunch of ****"

It must be something in the parts then, not the build. You and your Dad built yours and I wonder if Curt didn't have his sent to him built as a shortblock. Again, that blows, and slowboy should do something with this issue. Just my 2c. they got to stand behind their product.

damn that sucks...yea contacting slowboy is no help at all.. my friend sent his ecu to get chipped and it took like month for him to get it back saying its on the way when it wasnt... : /

I guess I am glad I didn't go with slowboy then!! I think they should stand behind their product, and take care of their paying customers, or face a dwindling sales from the Evo "family" on here! Take note.
