my engine blew....any thoughts and help?

so here's the story:

i was driving home at night about 10pm-ish, driving up a hill with, wut i would say, an incline of about 4-5 degrees. crusing along at 40mph in 4th gear.....that's about at 3000rpm and since i have an FP Green, the turbo kinda spools quick near stock at around 3400-3500rpm.

so i decide to get on the throttle a little bit because i just had a fresh new tune by Chris from AMS.....here's the link to my power gains:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=290082

and i just got the tune about 2 days ago. the turbo started boosting and i was watching my boost gauge, expecting to peak at 1.9bar ~ 28-29psi. the moment i seen the needle hit 1.5bar ~ 21psi (almost at full boost), a rod shot throught the block. smoke and oil spewing everywhere, and im starting to freak out not knowing why and wut the f*ck happened to my motor. eventually i opened the hood and found half of a rod sitting and cruising on the block.

the next day (today) a few friends of mine helped push my car into my garage and i managed to take these pics.

looks normal up top

as i look pass the headers
http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/664/dyno008sw4.jpg

and here's the damage

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/6443/dyno007vo4.jpg

now i just hope that my heads are still in good shape. i have yet to rip out the motor, disassemble and figure out the extent of the damage.

any thoughts or help of why this would've happened? or of a new direction i should take? ex: fully built 2.0, AMS 2.3RR .....??? since my motor went, i might as well build up, now that this is a new project.

detonation looks like.

i see from your other thread that you have alcohol injection... Check it if it failed as this would explain the engine damage...

most probably this is the reason....

jrsimon27 Aug 19, 2007 07:44 PM

what alchy kit do you have? it must of failed, this is what scares me about alchy better use racegas

i have the SMC kit

the kit actually works fine. sprays on at 10psi and max at 20psi. hmm...

my friends also brought to my attention that it may have been a spun bearing(s), too much boost, the alky (like you folks have stated above)

so.......

+1.. Sounds like the alky injection went out, car ran lean and detonated=boom!

29 PSI OF BOOST !!!!!!!!!!! ??????????

What kind of fuel are you using >

+1 on the detonatiion due to no alchy

wizzo 8 Aug 19, 2007 08:28 PM

Your engine wasnt drinking enough alcohol:drink:

OK I see now that you have alchy

Honestly at 29 psi you are taking a crap shoot on the stock bottom end

I really do not recomend to my cutsomers going more than 24 - 26 psi on alchy and pump gas as IF you are going with very high boost - e.g. 28 - 30 psi on pump gas with alchy you can pick up a bad tank of gas and get a lot of knocking

I look at alcohol as a tuning aide - not as a race gas like platform

I am very conservative in my recomended boost levels and a/f I suggest which in the end has been the source of frustration for some customers who are looking for agressive tuning and extreme results. I would prefer to see someone run 24 - 26 psi of boost on pump gas with alchy as this leaves a lot more margin of saftey for those occassions where you may pick up a suspect tank of gas. If you look at alcohol as more of a tuning aide to help increase power gains it is better than considering it as a race gas substitue IMHO.

I am sorry to read of your loss. Hopefully your head is ok.

Too much heat (lean air to fuel in relation to boost) could have caused some preignition forcing the pistion downward prior to the spark.

I have seen many cars with SMC alchy kits pick up knock on very high boost levels. Remember, the kit uses a small pump and was originally designed as a tuning aide. Spraying alcohol on top of race gas is not going to arrest all detonation when running pump gas. All it takes is a stale or weak tank of gas and you are going to see huge knock counts on a car with that kind of boost.

Alcohol injection is not the same as running say C16 leaded race fuel.

Keep in mind - from what I understand you are dealing with Hawaian gas which is just about as miserable as cali 91 octane piss gas (I have been in Hi tuning cars and the car is very weak) I would never recomend that kind of boost level on HI gas.

If it was detonation you better hope your head is at least repairable so that way you can at least throw it on a stroker bottom end

eekk, i spun a rod bearing back in june, and still dont have my car back Sucks Blowing motors i can tell you that much.
