Tale of two 500 plus whp Evo 8's on the ICS AWD Dyno !
 
I had a really exciting Saturday yesterday when two of my favorite customers came by to do some dyno testing and tuning

The first was a 100% stock engine (cams only) with stock ecu and 780 injectors with David Buschur's old GT35 turbo kit (old style back housing and cast manifold) and stock fmic pipes ! This car previously made 455 whp on Buschur's dyno with 100 octane and the car came back to adjust a minor driveability issue and try to make more power on straight C16 which we did reaching 546 WHP !

Incidentally, this is a new record for the amount of power I have made with a stock MAF and stock ecu.

The next car was a 100% stock motor (cams only) Buschur Stage IV with Buschur Turbular GT35R turbo kit and Buschur alcohol injection kit on 100% 93 octane pump gas. This car also had the BR AEM EMS and BR Coil on plug ignition. This car came in for a full retune after another tuner had tuned the AEM, we made some minor changes in the set up re-routing the vacum hoses and changing the wastegate spring.

This car came out silky smooth and knock free at an even 500 whp on pump gas at 26 psi of boost.

Its hard to draw any conclusions about two such dis-similar set ups but the main conclusion I would highlight is that the tubular header of Buschur is a huge advantage and really helps both with spool up and top end power.

It is clear that the 500 whp pump gas car is making the power with a LOT less boost with a lot greater ease - some of that is due to the AEM and lack of a MAF but I feel it is mostly due to the better header and turbo back housing.

TECH HINT for the day. Something that applied to both cars. You want to make sure your wastegate spring is small enough to allow your intended pump gas base boost pressure. if your gate spring is too stiff you will not be able to get the boost low enough to run pump gas boost level - say 20 psi.

Thats interesting Al...DB always said his cast manifold was as good or even better than a tubular manifold. Your testing and dyno sheets clearly show otherwise. The tubular is making torque sooner. Nice power on both cars!

While I agree with David on many points my experience has shown that the tubular manifold has consistantly worked better and made more power

I find that the Buschur turbo kit - GT35 or GT37 - is the best kit at the best price on the market with the TUBULAR manifold - the better things and a superior header design with gate directly attached to the collector and a tial 44 gate instead of a 38

Favorite customers meaning guys who have been tuned several times and whom I know well after having worked with them several times

Indeed. A lot of time was spent to encourage the customer to put in head studs on the spot but he apparently has plans to remove the head and drop in some pistons in the bear future.

Here is an interesting comparision I was just thinking about

Here is a car I tuned two weeks ago - a 2005 Legacy GT Subaru - (basically same engine as a Subaru STI) with GT35 Turbo - pump gas and alchy - this car had 100% stock engine, cams, head etc on stock ECU - reflashed with Cobb Ap 1

The Legacy has basiaclly the same modification level as this Evo - fmic, larger injectors, etc etc

Its interesting to note that at these power levels and mods the results are very similar between the two cars with a Gt35

After you modify the engine and add a stand alone it seems the 4G63 has the upper hand (at least where your name is not ESX). But with the stock long block and basic bolt ons it seems both power plants are capable to easily get the Gt35 up and running. Note the TQ advantage with the Subaru due to the stock stroker set up. With the stock rods and valve train on the Evo the rpm range is similar. The Evo can spin a lot higher with less modiication to the engine.

Anyway - it was some food for thought I was thinking of.
