Dump vs reg. o2 housing on FP Turbos

What have people seen between a regular style o2 housing (like a ported megan) versus an o2 dump (like a Shearer) for use with an FP Red or Black? I'm trying to figure out if its really worth doing a buzzy dump housing versus a regular o2.

Are there significant, proven gains on a Red or Black when using a dump housing, or has a ported Megan o2 proven to be just as good. Has anyone done a back to back swap and seen gains from one over the other?

Dump FTW. This thread will get closed. Their is a lot of info about this already on evom

people have done test on other turbos everybody knows a dump will net you more power but you also get louder sound and your car stinks even more. Having no cat is enough of a smell for me lol. I got a ported ebay ss o2 ill still get killer gains but would net more with a dump everyday but i dont care about that extra 15 or so whp it might get me. I dont want my evo loud annoying and smell unbearable

Svendiesel Mar 19, 2010 01:58 PM

Yea thats what Im considering too really, is that annoying frickin noise. I hate that sound. If the gains are significant enough I would probably suck it up and do it.

Im basing my questioning off of Buschurs results of a dump versus a regular o2 on a stock turbo, I was curious if the same results held true for a dump housing on a stock frame upgraded turbo.

You don't hear the dump until you are at WOT or over 18psi. Also their is NO exhaust smell! Great mod!

i love my dump...it barely smells...its loud as hell. i take it downtown during bartime and dump in 1st or 2nd gear and scare everyone! its so fun...they duck and run like they are being shot at!

he is right...except for the over 18psi part...
it only dumps when the boost level warrants the wastegate to open...so depending on actuator is when your dump will open...and thats the only time you smell anything...and if you do its only a faint smell...its very bearable.

 Sorry I have an 18psi wg so I'm use to mine opening then but yes it does depend on the wg and the preload on the flapper.

Yea Id be doing the 25psi WGA, so I really would only hear it when I purposefully get on it hard it would crack open.

The exhaust fumes smell good if you're running E85 :-)

There is a reason that most aftermarket turbo kits have external wastegates to regulate pressure better on bigger applications. You can recirc them too and for the dsm's there used to be a few companies who used to sell a completely divorced O2 housings that recirced further down the O2 housing or into the downpipe. I think MAP is the only company that actually sells a dump that recircs. {thumbup}

ive never had anything other then a open dump coming from hondas and they have never smelled my car was so loud i never really heard it anyway they really are not bad low back pressure is the name of the game

sparky Mar 19, 2010 09:50 PM

The superiority of an O2 dump over a tubular O2 is really not clearly established under all circumstances. I am willing to play The Devil's Advocate and debate the issue with my friend, BLkCarbonEVO.

Aside from the pleasure factor that some users derive from the thrill of the flapper valve cracking at low boost, the benefits of an O2 dump are not well established or clearly defined under all circumstances. You really have to establish the basis of the comparison and take into account all of the variables first.

Thanks Sparky! You know what side of the fence I'm on.

Did you get my pm with the address for the $$$

Honestly I think Im leaning toward doing a back to back test on whichever turbo I get, ported Megan vs Dump housing. I need to see this for myself.
