3 tanks of E85 and look at my ID2000's! unreal!
 

Wow... i think this had something to do with my starting problem.

This is really disheartening as i built this car for E85. After only 3 tanks and i got this much gunk! The car started having idle problems and leaning out so i knew something was up with the fuel system. The last thing i checked was the injectors because of how little E85 they saw. Man was I blown away with what i found.

I cleaned up the injectors with some starting fluid and I am running a tank of pump gas through it now.

I'm just kinda mad that it is this bad with so little E85 use. :thumbdown

Yeah that looks pretty horrible, also don't forget that it might get better and its so bad now because of the gunk that the e85 took out of the tank/lines.

It can only get better now before it gets worse.. Imagine what the piston tops look like.. E85 FTW!!!

Might want to look into replacing your fuel filter too.

That look's bad very bad I can imagine the rest of the engine.

why do only some people have this issue?

is it that the e85 fuel from a specific distributor is problematic or is it that converting to e cleans out build-up and gunk from the fuel system and clogs the injectors?

Ive ran like 50 tanks of ethanol, pulled my injectors out a few times in the past two seasons and never noticed any gunk on my injectors.

the filter is clean, i actually thought the filter was the problem so i pulled it (aeromotive -10AN filter) before i pulled the injectors.

i think this only occurs at the injector where there is heat involved. I think the car is fine, the injectors cleaned up just fine, and i will run two tanks of pump gas through it. which is what other people do once in a while.

I am not sure what the problem is from. I am running a -10AN fuel setup with E85 compatible lines. (black nylon summit brand that says its alcohol compatible). I think its from certain distributors/stations and their fuel.

It is the conversion to ethanol cleaning out the tanks that pushes the gunk to the injectors.

After reading through the other E85 threads it looks like it's a byproduct of the gas part of the E85 and only really gunks up the injectors. also not all States have the same mix so some people have no gunk at all while other have more. i hope Canada has some good E85 :)

We don't have E85...

I repair and maintain fuel systems for a living and I can tell you E-85 and bio-diesel clog filters fast. E-85 might not be as bad as bio-diesel but its no where near as clean as normal fuels. I hate working with automotive fuels because the tanks are never cleaned and years of crap builds up.

Plus E-85 must be the most horrid smelling fuel ever created..........

E85 not as clean?? you can almost eat off the pistons if you run E85.. I have pulled apart motors with 1000's of miles and been able to just wipe the pistons clean..

I prefer the smell of E85 over 93 any day..

It might be clean burning. That I can't attest to. All I know is that it likes to clog dispenser filters. As for how fuels smell my personal order is...

1. Nitro
2. Racing fuels(love alf)
3. JP-10
4. JP-8
5. Unleaded
6. Diesel
7. Bio-diesel
8. E-85
