what clutch should i get if i am making around 400hp?

Hi!

I'm going to be replacing my clutch and am looking for input on new clutches.

In general I'm pretty easy on hardware, I got 133,000 out of my stock STI clutch.

This is my first Evo clutch change.

Supposedly the previous owner installed an Exedy stage 2 and that's what I've been driving for the last 25,000 miles. I'll verify what it actually is when it's replaced. (Update 2-18-2011 it is an Exedy Stage 2 Clutch!)

It has a pretty heavy pedal to disengage the clutch and is noisy (clattering noise) when you're doing things like backing up or taking off at a stop light and trying to be gentle with it. The heavy pedal, I've gotten used to, but the clattering, I haven't.


But that being said if it is an Exedy stage 2, what is the normal life expectancy of this clutch?

And now the real question which clutch next?

I might eventually build it to around 400 HP at the wheels, but for now and probably the next 8 months it remains stock.

I'm looking for day to day usability but with some room for mods.
I can handle a heavy pedal, but I don't like the noise

It might get taken to the track every once in a while for some laps but not drag racing.

Can I get a daily usable street clutch for around 400 HP 400 TQ at the wheels or at this point am I being unreasonable?

Feel free to tell me if I'm being unreasonable or to get all of that it costs $$$ or you can expect to get a clutch that will hold 350 HP/350 TQ without being chattery.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just don't have any reference on what to expect.

OEM replacement clutch Exedy MBK1001, probably not but maybe.
Exedy Stage 1 05803 Maybe
Exedy Stage 1 05803HD Maybe

Exedy Stage 2 05952 If it's actually what I have now probably not.

or maybe a ACT street clutch model. (I know that there are several).


Anything else I should consider???

Im going with a ACT XTSS to replace my stock clutch. Heard its a little stiffer from stock but nothing big.

I ran a ACT HDSS (street disc) clutch for 50k miles. I was putting down 360 tq and had about 25 launches on it. When I took it out it still looked fine. Daily driving was very easy with this clutch.

Get Act HD SS or Act 6 Puck

Look into the WORKS CK2 clutch too.

I drove an Exedy Stage 2 HD and it was too much for me to consider livable in a daily-driver.

ACT HDSS I have used personally with great results. Do a search, theres tons of threads on this already.

Exedy twin disk a lot of people use too. When i get in the market for a new clutch the exedy is the one i'm going with...

ACT HDSS all day

I have an Act xtss. Holds 508 ft/lbs. Very easy to live with. At first i was reluctant to go act because of all the bad rumors about them, but then I thought, wth might as well take a leap of faith. Turns out this clutch is great! Act hdss and xtss are great clutches, just take them to a good installer.

I am in your same situation. I plan to go with FP HTA Green and 400/400 max.

I talked to a couple of vendors/transmission shops on what they suggest I go with.

I wanted something very liveable on the street, with a long life-span, but be able to handle the power. I don't drag race, and am not a big fan of launching on original t-case/trans.

The clutch two of the vendors agreed upon was the Clutch Masters FX300. It has a kevlar friction surface, which takes longer to break in, but will last longer and has a smoother/quieter engagement. Each clutch is tested before it leaves the factory. The FX300 is rated to 550ft-lbs @ the flywheel.

HDSS hands down if you don't plan on shifting past 7800 rpm daily.

I can't wait to replace that SOB but it won't die. 70k miles on it and it still performs great til 7800
