Catch Can(Is this worth the money)

So im working on getting the rest of my parts for my 2.4 build. I am sure I need a catch can but there are so many to choose from. I found this one on ebay that looks decent.
And yes I did search

Oil catch cans are very simple devices, I'm sure that one works just fine. It's hard to make one that won't work. Looks good, too.

goodhart Mar 4, 2011 01:30 PM

That thing looks ballin for only $50!

But any catch can should work also, whether it is a $5 one or $500, they will all work equally. I never understood the guys that just had to have some fancy pants catch can, waste of money IMHO.

Pirana Mar 4, 2011 02:13 PM

Looks pretty decent for $50

SwishaSweet Mar 4, 2011 02:28 PM

Just make your own catch can. All the big company ones are big overpriced crome things when really you can make your own out of a few air tool fittings and a clear container so you can check the level. The catch can dosnt need to be much bigger than a pill bottle, becuase youll probible empty the can every time you change the oil so having a catch can the size of a forty of OE is just a waste.

ok, well i will give this one a try, seems like a decent price and looks pretty nice.

It's easy to make a can that does nothing. Here's a link to a proven catch can. He's a member on this forum. http://www.saikoumichi.com/

don't waste your money, just run a tube to the bottom and drain it on the ground, there won't be a lot of oil/moisture to be seen on the road, I've been running this setup forever. I used to have a catch can by the pvc valve and it fills so fast

thats because it wasnt doing its job. i did about 50-70 pulls at 600whp on my 2.3 and maybe a teaspoon of water/fuel mix came out of my catch can.

FnF EVO8 Mar 4, 2011 04:22 PM

yes it is worth it

localtoys73 Mar 4, 2011 04:49 PM

Well I just bought it, even if I have to modify it to work I will. If not I will have a sweet looking coffee mug.

I have the Buschur one which is definitely, hands-down, the best option IMHO. It comes with a new dipstick too which allows the oil in the can to drain right back into your oil pan where it belongs. Simple setup and mounting and it works. Plus, it's a very nicely made piece. :)

badev0 Mar 10, 2011 07:42 AM

Looks decent for the price. I'd probably weld a fitting on the top of it for a large k&n breather filter.

catch cans are not all made the same and it is best to have one. i would go with the one from STM along with the vented dip stick or Buschur.

not to be a naysayer, but if your catch can is usually filled with all sorts of blow by which has combined with any sort of condensation there by contaminating said oil why would you want to have that drain back into your oil pan? i know my catch can never had anything that looked nice in it when i would dump it. I understand BR makes it and it seems to work but my catch can always had a bit of something else mixed in when I dumped it so it dont seem like the greatest idea to have it drain right back in unless there is some sort of sweet check valve that only allows oil to drain and keeps everything else in the can

My03evo Mar 10, 2011 11:58 PM

That one looks decent for the price and sounds like it might have media in it too?

I would go with the Saikou Michi's, they're good becuase they have baffles inside that pull out the liquid not just an empty can. Some of the hollow ones can be taken apart and can put steel wool or something in it to help seperate the vapors from the liquid and what not.

I found Two (1 big 1 small) of his cans with lines, clamps, AND a Krank vent all in great shape on ebay and got it for 50 bucks Shipped! Deff scored with that deal

sirsol Mar 11, 2011 05:47 AM

Ebay catch cans are fine AS LONG as you seal them before hand. Actually, IMO, this is true with even the "quality" name brand ones. I use a tube of hondabond (look it up if you don't know what it is, its a very oil resistant RTV material honda sells) to seal all of the fittings and seperation lines the can might have. You should also add some baffle material if there is none, I use thick steel wool to give the oil vapor something to condense on. Other than that, you should be just fine with cheaper catch cans.
