Exedy Triple - Have You Seen This Before?

4 Attachment(s)
OK, here's the deal. This Exedy Triple Cerametallic clutch has about 2500 miles on it. The car its on made 780whp and about 660lbs of torque on a Mustang Dyno at 44lbs of boost.

I pulled the transmission to have Shephard do his magic on it and now that I'm ready to put it back in I look at the clutch and find this. Look carefully at the splines on the hub. They are rolling over. So are the splines on the disks themselves. The disk closet to the flywheel has the most wear. The clutch now has slop in it.

Is this normal in a high horsepower car with one of these triples? Have I exceeded the torque limit of this thing and need to move to something else?

seems to be a reoccuring issue for these clutches

Where have you seen others talking about this with these clutches? Any links?

Same happened to mine. Makes horrible noise when you shut down the car.

What did you do about it? Are you still using this clutch?

Pirana Feb 11, 2012 06:52 PM

Swapped it for new QM 8 led design.

Time for an exedy quadruple.

Sigh, just bought this setup; from evojoe nonetheless. Bastard, jk, mine has been fine so far.

n2oiroc Feb 11, 2012 07:17 PM

In all fairness, that is a LOT of power on a mustang.

EvoJoeIX Feb 11, 2012 07:27 PM

Im not sure what causes it and this is not why i sold my triple to you REV. Lol

Im thinking high torque and hard shifts will do this. That sudden unload to load between shifts, thats a lot of stress to handle

keep in mind that 660tq on that particular mustang hes talking about is around 800tq on a dynojet.

Is that QM design the same as this Exedy - with a center hub that is splined? Or do the disks attach directly to the hub?

The contact surfaces on my disks are fine. They are not hazed and there are no hot spots. The clutch was not slipping at all. It held the power just fine, that's why I'm surprised to find this.

I have a Tilton Twin Disk ceremetallic that i might put back in the car. It is good for a legit 1,000lbs of torque. The disks on it are attached directly to the hub, so there are no splines to get gauled up like this Exedy. I just don't like the clutch because it is much more difficult to drive being virtually an on/off switch.

The new qm has a different hub setup, here is a pic. You have a build list?
