Turbo Upgrades 500hp

Howdy everyone, I’ve been looking to upgrade my turbo on my evo 8. Here’s a list of my build

block. manley crank, kings bearing, manley h beam rods, wiseco 9:1 pistons, balance shaft delete.

head. Gsc s2 cams, gsc springs retainers, kiggly hla. Tomei cam gears

fuel. FIC 1120CC injectors, aem fpr, walbro 400.
grimmspeed 3 port
arp head studs
evo 9 turbo
Injen intercooler piping
turbo x fmic
tomei Bov
map 02 dump
Spark tech cop
comp stage 2 clutch

Goal is about 500hp with a disgustingly fast spool time. The car makes 400 on E and basically spools up instantly so I’m coming to you guys for help. The way I see it you have a few options.

1. FPGreen completely maxed out
2. MHI FPRed sacrificing 300-400 rpm on spool
3. T3 kit with a small bb snail.

Is it a 2.0L or a stroker?

2.0l

If your goal is really only 500whp, you can do the MHI green.

However, You'll find that the red doesn't really lose that much to the green on a built motor and it will make more power, or make 500 at a lower boost level which is easier on parts. It's up to you, but I would go with the red.

So if you wanted just 500whp on E you could get away with a green? I do like the idea of getting the MHI Red but I’m just afraid that from a roll the car will be slower. I should have stated that the car is primarily a canyon ripper and street driven. From a roll I’m able to eat cars pushing 150-200 more whp than me and I’m afraid that I’ll lose that by upgrading to a laggier turbo.

there's no reason to start a roll race from below 4k rpm, and without brake boosting it.

This is true but I’m scared of the car “feeling” slower. I see posts of people getting the FP Red and putting down 600 hp but saying the car doesn’t feel as fast as it did when it made 400hp with a quicker spool. It’s all about the power curve.

Bottom line is a car with 400 hp is not faster then one with 600, yeah the one with 400 that spools quicker may have a slight edge for the hit but the higher hp car will reel it in. Like mentioned by letsgetthisdone just go with the Red it’s only a few hundred rpm lagier which is barely noticeable, just keep the revs above 4K and it will rip.

I ran autocross with my FP red. People saying it felt slow....I'm not really sure what they're on about. I chose the red specifically for abetter power curve as the green has a tendency to run out of air and fall off early.

You will need 1300cc to 1700cc injectors to make around 500whp+ on E85. Imjector dynamics makes a nice injector but check with what your tuner uses and recommends. He will have a good base map that drives well for them already.
Talking about the MHI housing.

The red has a larger power band then the green . Most dyno charts with the green come up then taper down. The Red comes up and goes well to 7600-8000 and will make over 600whp on E85. If you can't stomach the 100-300rpm additional lag of the red then you could go with the green for that near instant hit . I think its one of the best bolt on turbo's to preserve the way these cars make power, feel and sound.

If you have mivec I would 100% do the red. I'm very picky and feel that anything smaller then the red wouldn't work for me. If you floor it at 2000 its blazing the tires in 2nd by 3800-4000 on moderate boost. Its a great match for a street car.

Here are a couple videos of the red with a 2.2 mivec setup.

Brake boosting in 2nd at 2000 rpm. 136mph out the top. Full weight street car.

Half mile leaving soft at 3000.

I figured I’d run out of fuel at the top but honestly that’s not a big deal. I’m just still so torn on what to do. I don’t think there will be enough difference on the 9 turbo to the FP green, yeah it spools around the same time but they both start to run out of breath up top. So it looks like I might be going with the red but there is still the option of going T3. Money isn’t an issue I got the car for dirt cheap with the motor built already I just want to run the best combo of spool time and horsepower. I’d love to run a 5858 or even a 6262 but I just don’t know what I’m in for when it comes to lag.

While its being discussed, has anyone played around with the newer HKS GTIII RS turbo?

The FP Green and 9 turbo DO NOT spool about the same. On the other hand, the red and green are quite close.

Oh okay my bad! Why wouldn’t I try something like a 7163? They spool nasty quick and continue to pull till about 8 grand. Money isn’t a problem so who cares about the extra cost. I understand the red is gonna pull a little stronger up top but I just don’t see red being able to catch up on a roll or through tight turns.

I literally own an FP and out 25k miles on it. Your assessment is.... incorrect.
