US info about EVO 7, the real scoop

ok, well an owner of a local Mitsu dealer lives across the street from my parents, so i decided to mosy on over and have a chat, mainly to secure my spot to get an evo asap, but also to pick his brain. This is the OWNER, not a manager nor ignorant salesperson. He said this to me, i will paraphrase it here.

1. The Evo we will get in the US is NOT what you would expect, it mainly only LOOKS like the EVO7
2. It will likely have less then 250hp
3. Regardless of what your dealer tells you, the cars won't be here till Jan 2003
4. I repeat, i mainly only LOOKS like the EVO 7

This was dissapointing to me, i really wanted a full blown EVO, but i also think spending 40K+ on ANY mitsu is retarded.

Even though he's the dealership owner, he could be wrong ( hey I'm just hopeful ). The only people who will really know for sure would be the higher ups at Mitsubishi. Lets just hope they announce something at the LA auto show and give us some specs!

Prophet, did the owner have any papers to prove what he was saying? With all these ideas from dealers there had to be some letter or something at some point otherwise I just can't buy into any of it.

Sounds like it'll be a WRX competitor then. I guess they might up it the next year. I just hope the engine is the same as the Evo. It's starting to sound like we're just getting the old Eclipse engines... at least hp wise.

I'm still REALLY skeptical.

Owners that I've known tend to know jack about what acutally goes on at each one of their dealerships....let alone specs of cars.

I highly doubt that the Evo they bring over will be a watered down version....Mitsubishi isn't doing amazingly well right now....they wanna beef up their rep.

Why would they bring over a car to compete with the WRX when they can bring over a car that'll compete with the STI when it comes out?

It seems pointless to me to bring over a watered down version when the STI will be over soon after that. The Evo would just get trampeled upon in sales.

Here is my guess, (afterall, this IS the Rumor forum, right? ) The motor for the US "EVO" should still be 4G63T CN9A up...but with side mount intercooler to avoid the 5mph bumper, and sidemount WAS present on the Lancer GSR model (1.8Turbo AWD)...with smaller turbo, some tweaks to the ECU....BAM! you have approx. 230 hp....

That's ALL MY GUESS, don't flame me, I have no reliable sources at all

i think your looking at this wrong

mitsu's doing poorly will not be remedied by one car. The EVO is not a car for the masses, it's too rough. i would go so far as to say that 95% of all cars that have equivalent models overseas are watered down here in the US, be it for safety, price, insurance, whatever it may be. But don't get it twisted, why would these "ghost" import companies invest in bringin over full blown EVO's if next yr they will be here?

My guess is the "waterdown" will not have a limited number of production, just like the regular WRX, while the Real EVO and the STi will very likely be a limited production car (10,000 units worldwide)

well....we shall see boys.

I'd rather not say anything about anything right now. 'Cause chances are....we don't know anything about what form the Evo is going to take over here.

I'm just gonna wait for an offcial statement....which will (in all likelyhood) come within the next few months. This is the Evo Rumors section.....I say we take them as just that, Rumors until we here some official word.

That is soo much BS, its not even funny. Mitsu is doing so bad in the US market atm, especially after the disaster known as the new eclipse and followed by another known as the Lancer. And to top that off, its gonna ruin Evo's reputation in USA by bringing us a pos snail...I don't think so.
Heck I firmly believe that the US version might infact have more power than the Jap version. In USA we don't have a limit on horsepower, unlike Japan, where i believe its like 280. Every japanese car makes at most 276 or 280. Go play Granturismo and all those cars have at most 276 HP. except the NSX, which I still can't figure out why.
Anyway, we might get a Evo around 270 or 280. Defintely not under 250. A month or two ago, a Subaru Executive spilled the beans on the STi. Saying that STi will be brought into the picture slowly with addon mods for the WRX and by the time Evo is here, the full blown STi will be here too. There have been huge debate over the Evo vs STi. Basically, face it, Evo is more powerful that STi in essentially everything. But the STi attracts the bastards who don't have taste for power and just want comfort and nice dashboards and all the pink stuff. Evo is raw power. Well the Recaros are pretty comfortable if you ask me. And I'd love to wrap my hands around that momo steering wheel.
But my point being, I've heard all kinds of nonsense, but I know for sure, and heard from quite an amount of individuals, whose names I wont mention, for the sake of them getting fired. That WRX is not even gonna be close to that amount of power the US Spec Evo will put out. Now all I hope is they keep the recaros and brembos and momo stuff. I don't want no DSM crap.

As long as the EVO comes with the 4G63T and AWD thats all that matters its easy to bring it back up to the stock 280Hp that they have in japan.... it would be better if it came over as a WRX competitor maybe it would cost the same then and would be more affordable..
