Close knit indeed. The community really pulled together as the failures started happening.
On that note, you should have seen things prior to the release of any official data from BMW. You think the leaks of info and lack of detail were bad from
- we were completely in the dark for months from BMW. Not to mention production delays (because of reported engine problems) and a ridiculously low supply. Not to mention an allocation nightmare that makes the Evo look like a cakewalk - every dealer got an indentically equippted Laguna Seca Blue car (color in Tux's pic above). No option to change, and no notification that the car was coming. Then the first "customer" cars followed weeks (even months for many dealerships) afterwards.
Back on topic, I will say that BMW has issued a significant change on the known failure parts in the e46 M3 (started with 11/02 build dates).

Re: your friend.... I don't know that I'd buy a 2003 M5. Last of the model year before a major redesign. In fact, I'm not even sure how many (or if any) 2003 e39 M5s will be produced. If he wants amazing performance and four doors, I'd talk him in to an Evolution...
I'd say there's probably almost nothing to worry about with an e46 M3. I wouldn't think twice about engine failure in buying a post-11/02-built e46 M3
What I would think about is performance bang for the buck. And that's what lead me to the Lancer Evolution... that and being a longtime fan of the Evo-VI and Evo-VII.
If you want a good overview of the e46 M3 failures, check it our here:

actually too late...he already has one....but I'm sure he's not complaining...if I remember correctly, BMW is only bringing over 2400 M5's this last year before redesign. either way, i tried talking him into the EVO, but BMW is in his blood. He's had a '97 e36 M3, '02 330 ci (for only 6 months due to lack of power), and now has the M5.
i guess that i'll and try and give him a run for his money.
take it easy
