Why no center and front diff info in the manual?

Well, I was wondering about this and I think it might be interesting for some of you here as well. After going through the tech training book, I couldn't see any info on the front or center differential that is going to be used on the new EVO.

Am I missing something here or there is something strange here?

The thing is that this part (transfer case in particular) has both of these inside and according to the Japan Vehicle page, there will be only one version for the transfer case. That one is with helical front Limited slip differential and ACD. The similar happened for the EVO 7, where all of the versions (GSR, RS, and RSII) had one type transfer case as well.

It doesn't seem logical that built another transfer case and tested it thoroughly just for the US market

Any other thoughts?

Mr. AWD

They may be using an older transfer unit from an old Evo model.?

True, we might get a transfer case from the EVO 6. The question here is how much this part was different between the EVO 6 and EVO 7? My guess is much more than between the EVO 7 and EVO 8, but that still doesn't tell us anything at all.

The tech manual shown on this site is no where near the size of the real manual. I've looked at the full thing, and it's about 30-50 pages long, instead of what you saw there.

It did have a front diff and a transfer case in the manual I saw.

Any chance you will give us a bit more info on those? Specs?

Thanks

I don't follow... what are you hinting at?

It's not like thousands of people don't have the specs on the Evo now... I'm not sure there's any reason not to be direct and just post what you know...

I don't think that he know anything about this (same goes for me too), but he had a hint that there is something else there. That is basically what I wrote up there too

In the worst case, two more weeks till we found out for sure

I'm sorry... I posted my observations on page 14 of the official tech book post....I am not trying to be cloak and dagger here and I do not know more than anyone else but I refuse to assume unconfirmed rumors...I would like for people to dig a bit deeper

Those specs in the manual are only preliminary and were probably printed like 2 or 3 months ago. And don't forget that the manual says it's a 2003 Lancer Evolution while all the latest press releases say that the 2004 Lancer Evolution will debut at the LA Auto Show.

Does anybody know what model year the Evo is listed as in the dealer allocation system? If it says 2003, then I'll tell you my theory...

Three things:

1. It is a 2003 model.

2. That booklet or whatever thats been posted is NOT a tech manual. A tech manual for say a Galant or any other Mitsubishi model is tremendous. Imagine a Haynes guide on steroids.

3. The info that I have doesn't go into great technical detail either, but it does state that it is strictly conifidential and the embargo will be lifted on January 3, 2003. Perhaps then we will know about the other two diffs.

OK... then maybe Mitsu will really debut the 2004 Evo at the LA Auto Show and will include all the goodies like the ACD, AYC, and 6 speed and have a price of $35K+. But this 2004 model won't be coming until August or later, around the same time that the 2004 Lancer should be arriving. The 2003 Evo will arrive early in 2003, with more than 250 HP, AWD, and priced under $30K as was stated in Mitsu's press release in Jan 2002. Mitsu will not bring any more than the 6000 units since before long the 2004's will be coming. I think I could wait for the 2004's if this indeed was the case.

So why would anyone buy a 2003 model if they knew the 2004 would have all of the features? Probably because of the price and the fact that the car would be more than enough for a lot of people out there.

Ok, what Limey was trying to get at is he thinks Mitsubishi is going to surprise us all and bring over an Evo that doesn't have All-Wheel Drive. Not Active Center Differentials, ALL WHEEL DRIVE! He said he couldn't see where Mitsubishi stated that it would be on the new Evo's. I pointed him to the huge pile of evidence that said he was flat out WRONG!

Limey, I don't care if you express your opinions on this forum. That's what it's here for. But you were accusing people of falsely assuming stuff about this car, while throwing out COMPLETELY unsubstantiated rumors at the same time (where the HELL did you get the info about auto off headlights? Please point me to that info....) You said too that the technicians pamphlet is not reliable. Look man, Mitusbishi is not going to fly a bunch of mechanics to a different part of the country just to teach them about a car that they will never work on! What, tell them how to fix a AWD car, then say three weeks later, "Oops, never mind! We've now got a Front-rear muscle car!" C'mon....

So Limey, I'll argue with you all day long about this car. Who know's, but some freak act of God you may turn out to be right. But you might want to try RESPONDING (intelligently, I might add) to the counterpoints brought up, rather than running off to some other thread to start throwing this crazy-s**t out here like you know what's going on.

Everybody, sorry for the "witty" comments. I'd ignore this little ***** if I were you. He's just trying to stir up stupid rumors.

That is a great theory...I tend to agree... it sounds like a way to ramp prices into the future with minimal development investment....that still leaves the burning question...what are they putting on the release model? did the GTA have ACD or a different system????

I will ignore the other content of your post but my information about the auto- off headlights is printed in front of me on a printout from the dealer web site under the heading standard features it clearly states: HID Headlights with auto-off ...this sheet is marked confidential ....next to the Mitsubishi motor sales of america logo
