A buck-30 on the way home w/new Evo
We were just outside Barstow when the drugs took effect. Doh! Sorry Mr. Thompson, wrong story. But, we were just outside Barstow. Let me go back to the beginning.
Every fall, I take a trip to southern Utah to visit Zion and some other parks when the throngs of people are not there. I fly into Vegas, rent a car and about 2 hours later I am there. The route goes through St. George which is very nice town that I always visit on my way. I am driving by Blackridge Mitsubishi-Subaru (yea, they sell the STi and the Evo, very cool) and I see a beautiful 05 Apex Silver Evo VIII (GSR) out in front. 5 minutes later I am driving the car and an hour later I own it!
I have been reading your board for about 2 years. I knew I wanted an Evo for some time, but my Suby was fine and the Nor.Cal Mits dealers always pissed me off when I went in. The guys at Blackridge totally understand folks who buy these cars so I bought one while vacation!
The Evo is an incredible car and all you folks on this board, along with the motoring press, had me convinced I wanted one before I ever drove it. The grip, the chassis composure, the frantic pull on boost, the steering, and just the overall feel of the whole driving experience makes me grin every time I drive it. Obviously, with over 1000 miles to get home, my new Evo went past the 600 mile break-in mileage by the time I got back to Vegas to return the rental car my sweetie was now driving. I hit top speed (open road, little traffic) on the way back to Nor Cal (but before I got home with my new car from the dealer!), but the pull in top gear just made made me laugh out loud. I thought the Evo was a reasonably comfortable car, the seats in particular, on that long trip home.
For those, particularly in the automotive press, who bag on the Evo's harsh ride I can only say this. Find the worst pavement quality road, preferrably with a degrading surface that includes some gravel patches and marbles here and there, make sure it is twistly and undulating, and drive this road at roughly twice "normal speed" (if this deserted road with no traffic had posted signs), and the genious of the suspension tuning stock out the of the box will shine. At least that's what my buddy with his 250 wheel HP MR2 now thinks!
One more short story about my purchase. I am sitting in my new car at the dealer and this graying 50ish guy (I am 47) walks up to my passenger window. He asks me "How do you like it?" I tell him I just got, but it's bi*chin. So, he tells me he just bought an MR the day before and already hit a buck-fifty on the way back to Vegas! He goes on to say he looked at and drove the M3, AMG 55, and a few other high dollar rigs, drove the MR and bought it on the spot. "Why pay twice as much for less fun" he says. Cool.
Thanks for all the info and entertainment from this board. You all helped me decide the Evo was for me. I love this car.
Cheers

Great story! Im 50 been looking and reading about these cars for over a year and got mine in Nov. Can not imagine ever getting bored going to the grocery in one of these. I have two young children can drop them off at school and squeal out of the parking lot.
