Reliability after running the car hard?
Hey, i was wondering what experience you guys have had with running the car hard a lot, whether this be from a lot of track days or anything else. any mechanical problems so far with the engine besides wear items- clutch, brakes, etc.? tranny problems? this is especially directed toward you guys with higher mileage.
I just got a new MR after trading in my silver '03 and plan on doing a lot of track days, and am just looking at reliability after being run hard.
Thanks a lot!
Benny

no mechanical problem.
I do autox and my gf does autox like crazy. we both have evo and she never had problem with it.
But auto x and road course is different.
The road race is really hard on your brakes and suspension components. You could actually see fire on your rotors if you're not prepared (aftermarket pads/race pads/rotors).
Clutch wear is obvious on drag racing. I wore my good stock clutch out with about 10 drag racing days.
Trust me, you promise yourself you wont abuse it, but the competitive side takes over and next thing you know you're taking off at 6000rpm slipping.
Mr should be a great track car. It's really sophisticated.
I would use race slicks for drag specific and track specific and have your stock for daily or use advan for track or drag and get something for your daily driving.
tires and brake pads are the only thing you'll waste, but no mech problem at all through the whole season of autox and drag racing + long highway travels.
Evo's made well.

The 4G63 takes a lickin' n keeps on tickin'. It's made for abuse. Treat it well, maintain it, and it will last you very long.
I was road racing a 1990 GST with 180K miles on the stock shortblock. These motors are awesome!

I agree.. its all about maintainance.. Both regular maintainance and preventative.. If you tune your own car, don't tune it to get every bit of horsepower out of your combination, leave a little on the table, and if you run it hard, don't put it away wet.
These cars can EASILY take a whole lot of abuse and hard driving if the car is maintained and not neglected.
Think about it this way, you treat it well, it will treat you well.. Take this from someone who has gotten 12 second times stock, and can run 11 second times pretty regularly, and still has the stock clutch, and has had no major problems with the car.
Stuff breaks.. the trick is to not neglect items that can be taken care of before a minor issue becomes a big problem.

I think it's all relative.
Warm up and cool down is always important.
Limit your launches.(I'm at three TOTAL) 31K on original clutch..
Rotate, balance and PREVENTATIVE maintenance is really how this car goes the distance. It is also an oil burner so be careful about going past your oil change intervals too far..

This one time after running it hard (Chicago and back) the coolant leaked the next day as i was pulling out of my garage. Then, inevitably my engine overheated and all hell was set loose under the hood. but that's about it.
All covered under warranty but an over heat at 3500 miles? Damn... but i still love my car

I have a few friends with dsm's that have the 4g63. They mod their cars beyond recognition and race daily. Everything around their car breaks, but the engine. I would say 4g63 is one of the greatest engines ever built.
runnign hard doens't hurt the car as much
the engine is solid
it's how the driver shifts such as powershift miss gears that hurts the car
if you just run it hard it shouldn't be a problem i never launch at lights i always gun it on the ramp entering highway with rightfoot all the way down until i reach 80's

The 4G63 mechanically is a very sound motor. It's the other parts of the car that people hve trouble with. The clutch is a weak point, and also a lot of people have been having trouble with transfer cases.
Almost 40K miles, 4 track days, 4-5 auto-x, ~50 drag launches, hard mountain driving, no major mechanical defects. Only the stuff one would expect (brake pads, clutch, tires, rotors, etc)
