I'm for the Sti. I have driven a couple and think to myself how fun it would be to drive it as a daily driver. The clutch just GRABS! I feel the Evo slips more when comparing the two. The Sti steering wheel also has more rubber on it that is nice to touch, not to mention that in interior is tight and finished well. I'd be more into beating on the Sti than the Evo. Evo makes weird noises at different times.

Are you also thinking of ergonomics? Subaru has definetly more comfort creatures, minus the radio. I really miss cruise control too. And in the long run you will be spending less on the Sti. An example is this, i'd be more weary of buying a used Evo than i would an Sti.

STi motors have gone, but Subaru replaced them... Try that with Mitsubishi. Over at Pulp Racing, Wayne Mellow had to replace the motor in his Evo...twice. Under warranty? Hell no. He came in and they punched in his vin only to find a flashing warning saying not to work on his car.

what you talkin bout miss daisy...both of these cars are going to give you problems, even when you modify a car the dependability goes down. you cant go wrong with either one because stuff we eventually break. not saying the thing will fall apart off the lot but the clutches will go and if you dont shift properly the gears can start to eventually grind and just other little things.

you know,

the whole evo tranny thing i think is completely overblown on the net. it's not even a regular topic anymore. i think it's a much smaller percentage than what we are led to believe because of this site; this site is a small demographic that does not encompass all evos sold. it's not even like those random polls that are supposedly pretty accurate with the mass public; it's an internet forum that attracts certain types of individuals which may or may not correlate in cars being abused or modded and thusly negating warranties.

people that don't have tranny issues don't complain about their cars. people that do, post about them, so it gives this negative image anyway; i know this has been said before, but my god just from reading some posts on the net you'd think every single evo out there is sold with no warranty and has a blown tranny right off the lot. it's simply not the case.

The ones who have problems tend to be the most vocal ones.

the sti seems to be a little more refined for daily driving. with a little better interior, cruise, different seats, ect. i picked the evo, but if you get the sti dont they give you a SCCA membership? maybe that doesnt make the deal, but it seems to give a good view on how the companies base their warranty work. suby encourages it, mitus wont do it if you raced and scca event. something to think about.

ps- if you are worried about the looking ridiculous thing, look into an RS, it looks a little more sleeper-ish. or if you end up with an STI just do a trunck swap with a kid that has a WRX.

I like both cars, but....

Consumer Reports recommends the STi and not the Evo for reliability.

Forbes also chose the STi:

Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution is a worthy competitor, but it has poor owner satisfaction and poor depreciation, as well as a problematic two-star rating (on a five-star scale) in the government's frontal side-impact crash tests. The Subaru, on the other hand, has above-average reliability.

Still not getting what im getting at. I know both cars are not cheap to have, I am more looking for a dependability stand point. I keep hearing conflicting arguments on which one is in essence more reliable for a every day driver. I still know cost wouldnt be cheap on either just wanna know which would be cheaper to maintain in a daily driver situation.

g6civcx,

yeah, i know.. it's just that it's been said so many times and all you hear about in discussions about the evo's reliability is it has no warranty and its tranny is about to blow up once you start the car. just annoying, especially since there are so few real-time complaints.

read the fine print. they void your warranty if you race it.
