Windshield Wiper Fluid Reservoir

Just curious, has anyon else had problems with theirs? This past weekend we had a serious drop in temp -- winchill below zero. Went to refill my fluid and noticed it's draining all over the front left wheel.

I call the dealership today, without even looking at the car, this "mechanic" says the reservoir is cracked -- since they are "notorious for cracking." I did just have some all-weather tires put on this past Friday -- perhaps a tube was knocked loose? :shrugs:

So, anyone else have this problem?

if its all over your left front wheel well its probably not your wind shield wiper reservoir, its probably your intercooler sprayer reservoir, and because thats water and not washer fluid it will freeze faster.

^ he is correct. The IC sprayer has a hole in the top for overflow and just flows out. There is no crack likely, just overfilled or water expanding as it freezes.

Word of advice... do not use regular water even for your intercooler spray, especially in winter. Fill it with washer fluid, as recommended by manufacturer.

the reservoir is the Left FRONT is for the intercooler spray ONLY.......that tank have a over-fill protection which will leak out the excessive water/ windshield fuild.....what you saw is 100% normal.

the Windshield wiper fluid reservoir is located at the right side of the TRUNK.....it donot have overfill protection so if that one leak...it may be cracked.

it seem to me that the mechanic is wrong here.

Windshield washer fluid is recommended for the IC spray. Water freezes and evaporates faster.

yeah if your intercooler spray OR the windshield wiper reservoir cracked because the windshield fluid or water froze, its your fault... the manual specifically tells you to drain it and put in anti-freeze when it gets very cold. if it cracks and mitsu doesnt warranty it, i wouldnt be surprised.

I don't think windshield wiper will freeze unless it is REALLY COLD. It has never happened to me on any of the cars I have owned and it gets below 0 quite often. Just use windshield washer fluid in the IC spray tank and you should be fine.

yeah who knows, do you measure the temp of the fluid? hehe maybe the evo just allows alot more freezing air in as you drive who knows...it IS really close to the intake so i would reason it getting that much more air.....but either way "never happened to my other cars" reasoning is getting old on this website.... be alil more responsible then blame it on mitsu.

obviously if the fluid NEVER froze, then mitsu should be held accountable but i bet the fluids DID freeze at one point on your car

I never said it would never freeze or did I say mitsu should be responsible if it does. I was just saying that it has never happened to me and I'm not going to waste the time to drain the IC spray tank just to save the plastic tank from cracking. If it did crack you could always replace it with Buschur's new alky injection kit that we have heard about so much . With the engine bay pretty warm I don't think COLD air going into the intake would freeze the fluids. But again who knows?

VatoZone, Kragen, and Walmart sell this stuff called HEET (I think thats the name) and it keeps your washerfluid from freezing and helps unfreeze the ice on your windshield. I bought one bottle for the winters in ND and it lasted all winter.
