Cams w/o cam gears

Sorry guys I am a newbie to this I was wondering can you do cams with out cam gears or do you need the gears to complete the install? Also what is the advantage of getting cam gears?

Thanks guys and sorry for the question if it has been discussed.

Thanks,
Chris

You can install cams without gears, the gears are just a nice to have becuase they will allow you to extract every possible pony out of the cams or they will allow you to smooth out the idle. They aren't a must but they only have advantages not disadvantages, this is why most go ahead and do them at the same time.

Alright that really helped me out I appreciate it. I have one more question why are HKS cam gears $100 more then Fidanza Cam gears?

Thanks again,
Chris

Mainly becuase they have HKS stamped on them, they aren't any better than any other gear. HKS is good but somtimes it just isn't as good as it is cracked up to be. Just my opinion and several others, I use Fidanza gears.

What Buschur said about cam gears
"272/272 cams, stock gears. I HATE adjustable cam gears, for the few HP you might pick up it isn't worth the risk of them coming loose and loosing adjustment. I have seen too many sets do this and you loose a valvetrain from it."

from what i have read i do not feel they are worth the money. to each there own i understand but from what i have gathered. If you have sme kind of ems like a utec you can control timing and smooth out the idle. i was also told that the install will be about 200 more then just cams because the tensioner and entire belt would have to be removed then reinstalled to do the cam gears. that is a lot of extra money for approximitly 5-10whp. like i said just my .02 cents.

if your gonna get the gears, upgrade your valvetrain, i floated all my valves from this... and i know HKS says "upgraded valvetrain not required".. it's bull, listen to David, not HKS....

Disadvantage- Slipping losing the settings, or worst case the valvetrain.

I thought they were necessary until I talked to Mike or Mark(forgot name) at Turbo Tricks and said he doesnt recommended them and to save my money because you only get 5-10 hp.

I would say the disadvantage is the installer not making sure the bolts are tight to spec, not that they fail for no reason. If they are good enought for 1000-1500 hp drag cars when used correctly they will work on my 400hp evo.

1000-1500 HP drag cars are rebuilt daily. Do you torque the bolts on your cam gears that often?

Sure why not, no lets be real. If you want put up a post and ask how my high hp cars run them. You will find several 400-600 hp cars on here running cam gears with no issues. I think you know what I am trying to say they are proven to work and work right but the stock gears work too. It is all up to what you want to do, personally I haven't seen one slip I have only heard of the honda guys talking about it, on here I have only heard of fear no proof.

My point is if they are setup correctly on every tested application I don't think their would be such a mixed opinion if they didn't work and it was proven.
