Cold start???
Okay I'm new to this cold weather deal with my Evo since its use to being down in florida where average temp is like 70-80's.. so last couple times I've gone to start from cold start and I MEAN cold *** start.. needle is below C for like 2 minutes.... car is not in gear.. takes alittle longer to turn over.. might be battery not completely sure... and when engine kicks over.. it jumps forward.. its not in gear, its not a jump like if you've ever stalled your evo.. its a gentle motion forward... its not like anything is creaking or screaming or anything like that.. was just wondering if this is normal for cold weather. I let the car sit like a day or 2 at a time since i'm here in college in ohio... car is parked in underground garage, oil I'm using is 5W-30 since its colder. Any ideas or should I not bother over this?

Is the clutch in or not when it moved forward? Mine when it is cold out if I let the clutch out in neutral the car will pull forward a little bit till it warms up. I just keep the clutch in till I am ready to start moving. If it is that it is normal. I did I search on here and found other people had the same problem. It worried me at first though.

that can be done easily! lol
as for the question.. clutch pedal is not engaged when I turn the car over.. I disabled that feature by removing the sensor on the back of the pedal.. the car is not in gear when it does this. The car doesn't move forward like its in gear... just moves like 1/4 of an inch

My thoughts....when starting the car in cold weather, meaning 32 DegC or below, I have noticed that the car turns over slower and seams to be "trying harder" to get the engine started. I believe this is due to the oil viscosity being lower (thicker) due to the cold weather. When starting the car the engine/starter needs to work more to get the gears turning and pistons moving. I have never had any trouble getting the car to start, it just seems like the engine is taking a bit longer and working a bit more to do so.
As for the car jerking forward. I have noticed this to at times. It is not a big deal, it doesn't cause the car to leap forward, it just feels partially engagged until it warms up. I think it might be due to the same thing. When putting the clutch in Nuetral the clutch comes into contact with the pressure place and rotates the center transmission shaft and gears, if the fluid is "thicker" maybe this causes the fluid to slosh around and apply some torque/force to the other gears and you get some movement until things warm up.
Well, that is a theory at least. I am no mechanic so take this info with a grain of salt. I am just throwing this stuff out there so that maybe someone else can let me know if my logic is even on the same planet as we are

If your car is not in gear and it moves when it's being started, you have serious issues.
Nope, it is normal. What happens is this. You have HIGH performace gear oil meaning it can take a LOT of heat and function fine. BUT when it gets cold, well it gets Gooey. When you 1st start your car and it wants to move foward, hold down the clucth and SHift, you will find it VERY VERY HARD to do so but do it to losen things up. Anyways the gear oil is so syrup like that even in neutral, the oil is so think thick that it still grab the shaft and turn it. Once things heat up, it is perfect, right?

ok tried the engaged clutch before start car.. and didn't move so guess you guys are right.. its just the fluid getting all gooey and stuff and then being so thick that it creates friction for a few seconds... friggin cold weather!! BAHHHH
