Did the pyrometer fail?

I have a 2003 evolution. My EGT is reading 200 degrees higher than usual. This all started yesterday. I turned on the heater and smelled metal burning. It kind of smell like brake pads rubbing against the rotor for too long. The smell lasted for about 30 seconds. After that there were no traces of any smell. I even pulled over, looked under the hood and took a few good wiffs and the smell was not there. The car is not overheating, the temp guage is where is suppose to be. The oil pressure is fine and the car drives and boosts like normal. In idle the EGT reads 800 degrees instead of 600 and cruising at 60, it reads 1000 instead of 800. There are no exaust leaks and everything seems fine. Do you think the EGT sensor could have burned up ?
