what does the EVO face up to?
what does the EVO face up to?
How will the EVO do performance wise? Does it stand up to the new wrx? what about sports cars such as the new nissan 350Z, or the infiniti G35 coupe? or corvettes? (after some mods done to the EVO, of course)
My friend got a used 1987 944 turbo porshe, and is going to get upgrades, turbo and such...right now, his car does 0-60 in around 6 seconds..he claims that after he's done, he can do 0-60 in 3.4 seconds...think this is true? he is going to spend around 25,000 on the car + upgrades, and he wants to race me once we get our cars...what do you think?

Ok, slow down. The evo kills the WRX. You probably mean the WRX STI?
EVO vs.....
STi - Very nice car.
Advantage.
1. 2.5L - We'll find out on this one?
2. Strong 6- speed tranny
3. DCCD Active center diff (want power to the front, rear or auto) For those who don't know.
4. LSD- Limited slip front vs. open diff
5. Lower CG for boxter engines.
6. TMIC- (top mount intercooler) Short IC hoses
Disadvanges.
1. No Twin scroll Turbo.
2. No equal length headers.
3. No projector bulb xenons.
4. TMIC - Heatsoak
5. Long exhaust plumbing caused from the nature of boxter engines. Higher pressure drop making the turbo work harder.
6. Maybe a precat in UPipe causeing turbo lag but the extra 500cc will help.
7. Has 3 turn lock to lock vs. 2.1 for the evo.
Infinity coupe / 350Z
No competition vs. evo or sti. except for better interior. These cars are heavy for RWD. No turbos. Doesn't handle that great. No tunning potiential compared to turbo cars. On the track the stock STi or Evo will tear it apart.
1987 944 turbo porshe
Anything is possible with $$$. Stock for stock that car is slow and outdated technology. If your planning to race in a straight line i'd suggest getting a new 03 cobra or something?
Corvette
If your talking about the Z06 it's faster unless it rains or snows
. I consider the evo and sti the ultimate sport car due to the versitility. I mean 4 doors. AWD. And the sti probably equal the 1/4 on a regular vette!. Change the computer raise boost and race a ZO6
for almost half as expensive. Com'on the evo has brembos, recaro, Momo steering wheel and let me say it again 2.1 turn lock to lock! It's a race car in a pratical sedan form with 4 door and a trunk. You can mod a vette too but the turbo cars are cheaper. Besides do you really want a street car over 500hp and 8 MPG? With turbo cars you can change maps with the right goodies and remain stock performance and track performance with a press of a button. Want 400hp one second and 300 just by turning down the turbos.

yea i thought that nissan was just gonna use the VQ engine in all the cars. isn't that what they have done? just basically dropped the same engine in the Altima, maxima, 350z, g35c...? maybe i am wrong but that was the impression I had. Plus they are gonna use the VQ engine for the Skyline I believe and just twin-turbo that
What turbo kit is out for that? IF you call spending 8K on aftermarket turbo good tunning potential you go right ahead. Please dont' compare to the old skyline GTR or GTS. I'm so
that they kill of the real skyline.
that they kill of the real skyline.

Also just test drove a 350z.....porsche has so much more feel and balance than the nissan the thing has been made to shovel forward in gobs of understeer and you can't turn the stupid TC off
IMO.......PANTS.

The Nissan VQ engine has extraordinary potential for tuning. If someone wants to spend the cash, there's 500+ hp in that engine (same with the 4g63). In time, expect to see aftermarket turbo and supercharger setups in the $4000-8000 range that will put it in the 375-400 hp range with minimal effort. At least in 350Z form, everything else is there to be competitive with an Evo 8.
C5 corvettes (NOT the Z06) will probably be marginally faster than a stock Evo 8. The Z06 is in another league.
It's hard to say who the real competition for the Evo 8 will be, aside from tuned WRXs and the upcoming STi. In the same ball park price-wise, you're looking at:
Honda S2000
Mazda RX8
BMW Z4 2.5, 325Ci, 325i, 325xi
Ford Mustang
Nissan 350Z
Lexus IS300
In terms of raw performance, none of these are really in the same league. Some are closer than others, and each of these offers things that the Evo 8 doesn't, but if your sole interest is going fast the Evo 8 is a pretty good package.

I thought 944 2.5L turbo had 220hp little over 3100lbs and run 13.5's? Great car for it's time but i doubt it could pull nearly 1g on the skid. I apologize for sounding like i was ******* a great classsic and another honerable mention is the audi quattro sport.
How much do they run back then? I was too young at that time.

Am I the only one concerned with the aluminum block on the 350Z? Bad for turbos.

I may stand corrected after this post but the S had 250 bhp...
The normal Turbo had 217bhp....
And I think the weight you quoted is for the standard 944 the turbo was so loaded down with stuff it was a lot heavier...
As for quarter mile times I am not a drag racer so it does not mean much to me.....also I think terminal speed is also a factor when you talk of quarter mile times.?
The 944 was able to obtain 0.93g on the skid I also do not think this is too shabby for a car that can be now 17 years old
Oh....and in 1986 they cost about $36,000 ....a bit pricey...but I guess there were a lot of rogue stock traders back then that could afford that car

People be careful when throwing out skidpad times. They are relative to the size of the skidpad. If you look at some mags that show great skidpad numbers, you might notice its a 300 ft skidpad. A 200ft skidpad will yield lower numbers.
I have a 944 turbo, and all I can say is LAG!!! My car couldn't spit at an Evo. They are worlds apart.... An Evo would demolish a 944, even a 928, and thats basically two 944 put together (without the turbo ofcourse).

***heres what I found on the 944:***
Model 944 Turbo
Year 1986
Units Built 24382
0-60 mph 5.5 seconds
0-1/4 mile 13.5 seconds
Top speed 152 mph / 245 km/h
Skidpad 0.90 g
Transmission 5 Speed Manual
from http://www.flat-6.net/view.php?model...Turbo&tab=spec
13.5 seconds...dosn't the evo do a 1/4 mile in 13.4 seconds...? hmm now im starting to believe my friend with the porshe...
a well performing fast car, for a cheap price that dosn't break down in 2 years like cameros do, would you guys still recomend the evo?

have you ever driven a AWD with over 250 hp?
I found very little lag on my 944 Turbo....in fact it had very linear and progressive torque characteristics...the most impressive thing about it was it was lightning quick thru the gears from 30-70mph and it was able to pull 160mph (once on a closed circuit of course!!!) this was nearly at the red line in top.....a real performance car......I only hope the American Evo does not feel like a weak grocery getter...as did the US wrx when I drove it...very dissapointing...
i have a 90' 944 non turbo 3.0 4 cylinder cabriolet. this thing puts out 210 hp... not too bad. i beat mustangs pretty good, but if i had a turbo on it, which will happen in about a year, i think it will push over 300 hp at the wheels. 944 turbos are no joke.
