i heard you have to disable one of your cylinders and run rich for it to do this. It uses one of your spark plugs to burn unburnt gas coming out the exhaust. I cant see how this is beneficial, but maybe they have different ways of doing it.

the kits use a seperate gas line and spark plug to ignite gas. but if yu want flames, w/o buying kit, then first thing you do is run your bov- vta. next get turbo back straight through exhaust w/ cat delete. run your car really hot the do some throttle blip downshifts. you should have mini fireballs coming out yor tailpipe, but buying a kit to make flames is gay. sorry, i had to say it.
btw, i wont gaurantee the outcome of these mods.

The old-school hot-rodder way of doing this is to tack weld a spark plug in your tail pipe and run power and ground to it. Flames a-plenty.
