272/272 cams idle

I got a question for you guys. How do the 272/272 cams benefit the car? Low end, mid-range, or top-end? Also, how is the idle on the car? How are the cams in bumper-to-bumper traffic?

The one thing that bothers me is stumbling when I'm driving the car especially as a daily driver. My current car (not evo) stumbles too damn much, and after awhile it gets annoying. All you want is a car that idles like it just got out of the factory, and it doesn't stumble when you push the clutch in, or your in some heavy traffic.

Are you tuned? I hear a tune helps BIGTIME w/ idle'ing.

I've had the 272's for 5 months now and have stalled once. The cams in combination with a turbotrix flash woke my car up in 3rd and 4th gears.

fist evo has had cams for almost a year and NO stall or issues thus far, now I have them on my MR for about 2 months and NO stalling issues. NOTE no aftermarket BOV on both evo's.. Idle has a nice rumble that really makes it feel like a true race car.

Car should not stall ever... Recirc BOV always like stock. Aftermarket intakes sometimes are confused with why Evo's stall also. HKS RS is known to stall cars. so does any similar open element filter.

There are flashes available that can help a poor idle.

i have mine set to +2 int and +2 ex and the idle is pretty choppy, but no stalling and the power is amazing all the way to redline... I need to get a tune badly though.

Let's say the gears are set to -4 -1, how is the idle on that setting w/o a tune?

I've found that people having stalling issues seem to be directly related to using an after market MAF pipe for the most part. Now before all you self appointed JDM guru's go off on me, you can tune around the issue. Most of the "noted" reflashers can send you a fix right through the mail (I still don't believe it runs as well as the OE pipe though). It is my theory that the OE MAF pipe is not smooth on the inside for a reason. The MAF sensor is very sensitive to directional changes in flow. With the lopey cams, you tend to get just enough reversion through the MAF to confuse it (or double meter air if you will). What you and I see as "lumps in the road" in the OE MAF pipe, actually help fight reversion enough to let HKS 272 cams idle fairly well untuned. I saw this theory tested when 272's were put in one of my customers cars still running an OE MAF pipe with every other external mod you could bolt on. Then, after installing the 272 cams, the car settled into a very nice rhythmic lope. Next, an after market MAF pipe was switched in, and the car would almost not run at all... stumbling and stuttering all over it's self. Put the OE pipe back on, and a nice smooth lope as consistent as an Olympic runner's heart beat. This was on OE cam gears... I run the HKS 272's "straight up" on my Evo as well. I like the deep lopey idle. However, I am not the type of person who would stand for any stalling on my daily driver.

I've heard a lot of people who set the timing to -4, -1 have an idle that they claim is better then stock. You can find all this info throughout the forums. Someone actually recommended setting the timing to -4, -1.5 and had a lot of success. I definitely recommend getting a tune just so your car responds better to your mods and gives you the proper amount of fuel. I guess you could use some kind of fuel computer, like Apexi S-AFC. I plan on using that after I get my 272's installed instead of a stand-alone fuel management cause I, unfortuately, don't have $2K lying around . Anyways, hope that answers your question.

hmmm well Iv'e been debating between the 264's and 272's and the only thing holding me back has been the rumors of stalling... I have tghe MR DV so the VTA won't be a problem, nor will the intake- as I plan to stick with the K&N dropin. Once the cams are installed a TurboTrix flash will be done.

So with all that said, will I need adjustable cam gears in order to set the timing to which will keep the car from stalling?

Absolutely not... I am running the 272's on a Turbo Trix flash and stock gears...
