When EVOs ruled the world....
When EVOs ruled the world....
Just come across this article in my car mag collection. From "Autocar" 9th December, 1998 (UK's premier car mag at that time)....
"Grip and Grin", the Impreza 22B, Lancer Evo V, Skyline GTR and Porsche 911C4 road test.
And the winner is ? And I quote,
"Mitsubishi in Japan makes much of the Evo's clever anti-yaw control and its hyper-sophisticated four-wheel drive system, but the truly impressive aspects are the naked straight-line performance (it's quicker than the Porsche up to three figures), the fabulously crisp gearchange, the manic steering accuracy and the near faultless balance struck by the chassis between grip, agility and pure feel. Apart from its over-light steering it's more communicative than the 911, and faster point to point than the Skyline.
Driven super-hard it will understeer, but only when the roads are wet and horns have started to emerge out of the side of your head. In the main the handling is as neutral and as exploitable as any sane road driver could possibly wish for. In the event there's less understeer than there is in the 22B, which pushes wide at the front pretty dramatically when you finally work up the courage to explore the last 10% of the envelope.
Yet at the same time the Evo also rides better, suppresses wind and tyre noise more effectively and is massively more refined than the Subaru when you don't want to play McRae.
Picking a winner is easy, then: the Evo V"
BTW Evo V = 276 bhp at 6500 rpm , 274 lb/ft torque at 3000 rpm
Weight = 1433 kg (3153 lbs), 0-60 mph = 4.7 secs, 0-100 = 12.3 secs, standing 1/4 mile = 13.4 sec/105 mph.
