for those of you who tune their own cars...
where did u learn?

did you teach yourself...? or did you take a course?

I have no clue when it comes to tuning....ignition/timing

anyone have any sites that gives you information on ecu tuning?

I would definitely leave it up to a professional at first.....but would like to be able to do it for myself eventually

thanks!

I started years ago tearing apart anything that had an engine and trying to make more power. My parents lawnmower, remote control cars and airplanes then some motorcycle and chevy 350 engines.
I did alot of reading and hung aroung with racers and gear heads. I then took those skills and started applying them to imports. The old school gear heads teach you more about raw engine horsepower and the new import guys talk more about ECU tuning.
Once I started on my 300ZX I learned alot from Steve Millen Motorsports and the community at twinturbo.net. I later started 300zx.org which flourished for a while until I couldn't maintain it anymore.
Communities like the one here are invaluable. Come here for most of your answers, you have many experts, racers, mechanics and weekend warriors to get info from. A good way to learn more about engine building and modifying is to get a cheap crappy motorcycle and play with it. It will give you a good basis as you can tear apart the motor and rebuild it in a couple of hours and it is light enough to take out without help.
Then spend more time and money on something a bit bigger. You can always find a good learning bike for under $200.00.
Had to add this, go to a library or find a good book on mechanics of the automobile.
Good luck.

Just saw on Horsepower Tv in Spike Tv they say that: "for every 100 hp over factory need to back timing by 2degrees"
