hey the guy that makes $21K a year can afford it just as well
If I can afford it with a job delivering pizzas, then he can very well afford it
but of course I still live with my parents
so its easier for me

when one doesnt pay for rent, food, clothes, utilities, etc. it gets much more reasonable... but If I were at that poitn I'd be saving my $$ to get my *** out of the house.. the peace of mind and liberty that one gets from living away from their family (not necessarily far, just not the same roof) will always be more important to me than a nice car.

My feeling on the subject can be expressed in one question... What good is a nice car to impress the ladies if you gotta bring em home to mom and dad's and be alll quiet and secretive.. "shhh... not so loud, you'll wake up my mo... damn.. Nothing mom, nobody's down here... no dont come down...."

of course that could just be me and my traumatic past

I couldn't imagine spending 30k on a car when I lived at home and didn't make much. Get out on your own and wait until you make more $. I also hate leasing, I'll never do it again..it may be cheaper but you are paying towards NOTHING...I guess it's ok if only want to have the car a few years and won't exceed the mileage.
I am also discouraged by the ricer image is giving this car with TF&TF2 and it's stupid comments reference video games. I didn't become interested in it over some video game.
Anyway, I'm almost 30 and have an income of about 100k. Luckily I can buy this car, have a nice house, and another nice new car, not to mention other things I want. Don't make your life miserable spending all you make on a car.

The racing heritage of this car will be ruined by the fact that most of them will be parked in driveways of little kids who still live with their parents and have seen the Fast and the Furious to many times. Not a crowd I'd like to be associated with. It's a real shame, because I'm sure it's a fun car to drive. Astonishing to me that people who make a lousy $30,000 or $40,000 a year will be buying a $30,000 car. Really amazing.
I agree with your amazement at the income of kids buying this car. I'm 30 and a Sr. Software Engineer and I feel like I can afford it comfortably with my income. Guys I know it's an EVO but damn don't sink yourselves for a car that will break you. Ask me how I know...

However, I have to wholeheartedly disagree with your and other remarks about the hood and spoiler features of this car. Those are not there for looks or "Image". Comments like that say to me 2 things. First you don't know much about the Lancer EVO heritage, because those are trademark features. Second you don't know much about high performance cars because those are necessary functional components. I'm not trying to single you out because there have been a lot of comments on this thread along similar lines.

I understand not wanting to be associated with a stereotype too. I think the BMW M3 is an amazing machine. Most of the 300 series cars are really. I'll never buy one even though I could. I don't want to be associated with the "pretentious bastard" image that those cars have in my area (Bellevue, WA). Same thing with the huge SUV's.

I can even understand personal taste. Hey if kids are free to put B-2 bomber wings on 90hp Hondas then you should also be free to remove the wing from the EVO.

However, have you ever seen footage of a car going airborn at high speeds? You may not go that fast but that wing is actually important for generating the downforce needed to maintain traction at the speeds this car is capable of (155 mph).

Also that vent in the hood is very important in keeping the temperatures down in the engine compartment. Turbos spin at 100's of thousands of rpms. This generates extremely high temperatures under the hood.

Anyhow enough ranting. I'm just getting tired of people putting down functional components of the EVO because they are "rice".

i'm gonna be paying for it in full, so i dont have to worry about financing... plus i can actually mod it if i own it

probably going to keep the badging and the spoiler. i would feel like i was committing a crime taking that spoiler off even though most people that see it dont understand. they think its too big.

apex-i n1 titanium exhaust
hks racing suction kit
motec ecu

and to people insulting others incomes, thats not right. if someone wants the car bad enough, they'll do anything to get it. some people have their priorities different than yours. it might be worth it for them to struggle on payments just so they can go out at night and tear it up.

I don't think anyone is insulting anyone here. some are just warning others to be careful and not overspend on a car. you don't ever want to be in a situation where owning something (car, house, whatever) prevents you from having fun. Because then owning that thing will become a burden, and take away some of the pleasure of owning it.

example: people who are house-poor - they spend more on a house then they can really afford. so now they have this nice house, and can't afford to furnish it, or go out and do fun stuff. to some people owning an Evo is very important - and the sacrafice is worth it - some of the older members here (myself included) are just urging a little caution - make sure you want to afford it...

Also, people need to remember the cost of living can vary drastically depending on where you live. The cost of living in Nebraska is very cheap compared to the east or west coast.

I make 38k a year and I will easily be able to afford this car.

I take home 2200 a month after taxes. Here are my expenses, btw, I am 25, signle, and living alone...

Rent: 485 (cable tv is included)
Food: 300 (might be too high)
Tele: 30
Gas: 30
Electric: 30
Cable modem serv: 45
Cell: 10
Fuel (car): 70 (w/ current car & evo) est.
Insurance: 22 (for current car)
Evo Insurance: 100 (est)
Evo payment: 500 (after 5k down and 5.25% for 60 months)

Take all that out and that leaves me w/ 578 for whatever. My current car is a 89 Mustang which is already paid for.

No, there was a specific person that was ******* a persons income in a very derogatory way.

I, myself was just asking how a person in a certain income level could afford a $30k car. I don't want people to fall into the same trap I did.

When I was 21, just out of college and making less than $20k a year, I bought a brand new Integra GSR. It was a fun first "new" car.....But the monthly costs of ownership (registration, loan payment, insurance costs, gas, inspections, etc) took up a major part of my income.

2 weeks out of every month I was working solely to afford the car. It wasn't worth it. I could barely afford to do anything other than drive. It wasn't until I was making double that $20k per year, and still living at home until I felt I could really afford the $18k car I bought.

So now that I'm a bit older, wiser, and out on my own, I try to make sure that the cost of the monthly car payment and insurance does not exceed more than like 1/8 of my monthly income......because there is more to life than owning a car.

I am 33 years old. My dealer told me the car he is getting is silver, with the high wing, and no sunroof. I bought it. I don't think you can choose too much at this point. He does not know if he is getting more evos.(or so he told me) I have seen many people discuss the looks of the car. They all look the same from the driver's seat. A wing or front bumper is not why I am buying the car. You either get it or you don't. If you know the difference between a civic and an evo you probebly get it. I'm sorry some people are so concerned about what others think.
I have always driven german cars but, this cars performance and value was too great to pass up. I can't wait to pass my Porsche buddies at Watkins Glen and then ask them what they paid for their cars. I hope this car can match the incredible durability of a german car. I drive hard everyday on twisty roads. I can't wait for 2-25-2003. I am using a tax deductable, low interest home equity loan.

Most people don't know and don't care if hood scoops and spoilers are functional, all they'll see is a grown man getting into a car that resembles a ricer. I mean, what am I going to do? Every time I get out of my car I'll have to say to people, " Oh, it's ok, the vents and spoilers are functional". I better write Audi, Saab, and all the other manufacturers to tell them that they better put vents in the hood of their turbo charged cars. I'm also going to inform Audi that they need a large wing on the trunk of their new 350 horsepower S4. ALL manufacturers make racing cars, does that mean they have to bring those features to street vehicles? For people in their 20's spending everything they've got for this car, think about how much savings you're forgoing. I drove junkers all my life so by the time I hit 40 I could almost retire. I don't regret not buying a Mustang, M3, or whatever at all. I know people in their 40's who spent and spent when they were young. Now, they're still living paycheck to paycheck!

boy, I hope you dont mean me. In case it was, My apologies to anybody I offended, this is a touchy subject and my tact is less than great.

I'm simply repeating what everyone keeps telling me about this car... that I dont wantto get bogged down in payments early in life... then I see others who it seems would be even harder to afford the car, and they seems to have no qualms at all.. I'd like to know if they have a better system than me for making ends meet.

i was referring to cordwood, who referred to my salary as "lousy," and stated that it was "amazing" that I could afford to buy a $30,000 car.

$40,000 a year isn't exactly rolling in cash, but for a 21 year old who is single, it's pretty good. I'm far from ashamed of it.

to me this is a dream! I have been waiting waiting and waiting more for this car to come....it's getting close to 6 years now. I am 24 and make about 24k a year. I can afford it...but i can't at the same time. I feel like it is gonna be tuff but this car is what I want...I was also considering a mini cooper S but for 23-24 k I would rather spend the extra money and get the car i have a love for. Yes I know it is just a car. But to set a goals in life is an important thing thing to me. It is a motivator for me.
