Question Winter setup for the EVO 8?

I live in MI. We have ton's and ton's of snow, when it's going to stop nobody knows. (i think that rhymed) And i don't think it going to stop by Feb 14th. Anyway, when we do get these bad *** rides with the high performance tires that come on them, i know they won't hold up in the snow. And i do NOT want to wreck it as soon as i get it because of no traction. We have AWD, i know, but what about some rims with a winter tire setup on them? What rim fits? Or what would be the best idea for a setup to dirve these in the snow, besides slow. I would love to have awesome grip in the snow, like i will in the summer (or somewhat close).

ack, I don't like blizzaks, and I am not sure you can get them in 17". BFGoodrich makes some touring tires that are excellent in the snow... I will find out the exact model of them and post here.

Tires won't be a problem... finding a rim that fits over the brakes might be. Can we just get some cheapo 17" steel wheels to fit over the brakes or what?

I have been pondering the same thing here in Minneapolis (even though we have no snow to speak of...we do have plenty of icy patches and all)...and it keeps bugging me (because I plan to live in the mountains within the next year or so...where it snows a lot...) why is it that we can't put snow chains on all four tires. I saw it written in the manuals that snow tires can only go on the back...I don't understand this and, contrary to best judgement, have tentatively decided to ignore that directive and just snow chain all four tires when it gets bad...why have all wheel drive and not be able to make it like an SUV??

What he said.

I would just throw a set on right over the stock wheels.

Yeah, Blizzaks are great and all...but nothing compares to chains in thick snow...nothing. So how about it everyone? Can someone tell me why you aren't supposed to do that?

Long term, this would not be wise. If the intentions are to drive the car every winter, an inexpensive set of steel rims is a much better choice. Wheels take a lot of abuse in winter driving.

Additionally:
- You can leave the winter tires on the steel rims year round, possibly getting 2 seasons out of a set.
- You can swap hi-perf and winter tires at a moment's notice. Nice dry (warm) day, throw the good rubber on and have fun!
- M&B for 4 tires isn't free, and paying for it 2 extra times per year would easily cover the costs of steel rims.

So, steel rims and blizzaks (or any other snow tire, they're all quite good relative to "all-season" tires).

How about a 10 year-old beater Subaru and a nice garage.

Quite frankly with the suspension that's going to come on the Evo, even with AWD and snow tires I wouldn't expect it to be good in the snow.

I wouldn't expect it to be amazing in the snow (i.e. Quattro Audi A4 with snow tires) but with a set of snow tires this car should do just fine.

I've been in highly modified AWD vehicles (tuned much higher than the Evo will come, with much more aggressive suspension) and with a set of snows they do OK - better than your average BMW with snows, anyways...

Everyone just needs to invest in a set of steel rims (or cheap alloys) and a good set of snow tires.... everything will be fine...

Snow Tires for the US Evo

I am planning on getting Semperit (Continental) Sport Grip snow tires in the stock size from Discount Tire.

Yep. The owner of the dealership that I'm going through owns a 3000GT VR4 Spyder and in winter he throws a set of Blizzaks on it. Says he's never even come close to getting stuck in anything and goes through snow like most trucks do.

Drives it year around... got heated leather seats in it now...

Blizzacks are ok, for passanger car tires....

But if you want a performance tire that is also a snow tire, get the Michelin Pilot Arctic Alpins.

They rawked on my Type R!
