Stock whp variation revisited

Now that several years have gone by, are there any new trends in terms of whp variation between different evos that you tuners (and others) have noticed?

Are we still seeing dramatic whp variation (someone quoted up to 40 whp at some point) on stock evos...even on 05's?

Have you noticed if the variation tends to go away after mods? In other words, if one evo dynos 20 hp higher than another, with it always be 20 whp higher if they build up with the exact same parts/tuning?

My car is stock and I havnt dynod it. It "feels" like it has the advertised power, but I wish I had more assurance that I didnt buy a bad evo without paying 150 bucks for a dyno seesion with no tuning. And performance meters like the gtech, etc seem about as accurate as the butt-o-meter.

all cars react differently to mods if you are comparing all 03 evo's.

03 vs 05, 05 are dfferent as stock they have larger exhuast housing.

i have heard from alot of people that they are slower evo's around mostly because they havent gone through proper break in period.

if you feel your stock EVO is slow, drive somebody else EVO if it seems faster stock, trade it in if you bought it used or take it to the dealer might have a leak if you bought it brand new

Well mine doesnt really feel slow. Its just I dont have anything to really compare to. Also, some say 10 hp is the minimum change you can actually "feel". Ive only driven one other evo, at it was about 8 months ago. Kinda hard to remember...but it definitely wasnt noticably faster or slower than mine. But going on the 10hp rule, his car could have been +- 10-15 hp or so (30 hp swing) and it would be somewhat difficult to remember whos is faster.

who cares, mod that thing.

if it takes you a turbo-back exhaust to run with someone else's stock evo, you got dealt bad cards...oh well. just cost you a little bit more money to get the HP. no big deal.

I would guess and say yes sorta .... after modding it may still be 20whp higher but chances are it will less than that but it should be higher (as long as the same identical mods are used) ... unless you change the part that is causing the HP difference ....

Once similar mods AND a tune is in place you would be surprised at how CLOSE the numbers are (on the same dyno). Out of the box, the 2004s have a bit more aggressive tunes than 2003s so they put down more stock, but that is corrected when the 03 gets a tune. Etc.
