Importing an Older Evo Model

I was wondering, as I am sure several fellow Evo enthusiasts have as well, about possibly importing an Evo V, or an Evo IV. However I know that neither of these have a US equivalent nor are they on the NHTSA list of cars approved to be imported into the states. So I am basically writing this to see if anyone knows of anyone that has acutally imported one succesfully or if to do this I would have to go through the dissmantling of one, crash testing a couple, and passing all aformentioned tests?

anyways any imput on this subject would be greatly appreciated

OK this is the reason I say what I say

Ive had my VI for little over a year now and I barely put 10k miles on it cause im worried about something happening to it. I like to drive my cars. Its the whole point in owning a car. I once put 80k on a car in less than 2yrs( coincidentaly a Mitsu). Im pretty sure all these guys with older Evos aint driving these cars much. We all know Evos are high maintnence, and if you drive these cars alot they will let you know when its time for work.

Plus all these cars attract too much attention. If I brought my VI back and someone hit it or tried to steal it I wouldnt stop untill I saw blood.

Point of the matter is you can crash test all the Evos you want but you will just be wasting perfectly good Evos. In fact the only true way of bringing a older model is if you happen to know a forign diplomat here on business has the paper work to bring their car with them and just so happens to sell it to you. I only know of one person that has been that lucky, those in the DC area know him. Now if you have a kid now by the time they are old enough to drive you should be able to get an IV and on with no problems.

Im not going to lie, I get caught up in the moment everytime I hear about someone bringing an older Evo in the states but at the same time I need to wake up and smell the coffee. These cars are illegal. If you get in an accident or something happnes to that car one way on another you will be getting shafted. You notice that these people arent flashing thier older Evos around for a reason.

Sure the USDM Evos arent as flashy as the older ones but they are legal and the after market is all overthem. If you can find a 100% way of bringing my Evo back with out it looking like a 1000 piece 3D puzzle and costing me my 1st born we can do business. Until them she will be for sale to get a USDM Tarmac Black EvoVIII.

I tried to import a RHD toyota MR2 (1996) back a few years ago. Bought the car from www.bestjapancar.com . Had it delivered to Florida. Customs seized the car the minute it left the ship. I never got it back. I wound up selling the car to someone else for 1/2 what I had in it just to get rid of it.

NOW...that said...there are importers that can get you the car here in one piece...but you can never title or register it. You could possibly become an autodealer (on paper) and slap dealer tags on it but I am not sure of all the intricasies invovled with that.

There is another way also that involves being a US Service member and having the military ship a car home for you from your overseas duty station.

Other than that...enjoy your VIII.

actually oldschoolevo all the evo owners i know do have there cars legal and have vins and everything and covered on insurance! one is even in WA state where i am but most are on the east coast. and they dont flash the evos off (usually) because they dont want people askin how they made them legal because its all through loops holes sometimes and just plain honesty it gets hella annoying for them, since i do talk to them on a daily basis and they tell me all the time that dumbass kids ask them stupid questions all the time lol

^^^^^^^^^^

Personally, I think you are spreading misinfomation that it's somehow easy to smuggle and legalify (just made up the word) it. When Motorex first started to import skylines, there were so many rumors monger that xyz company can send one over at fraction of Motorex's cost. You know what. Those people got conned big time. Money gone and dealer fled to xyz place. Now, Motorex isn't making skylines legal - took a bunch of shortcuts and the gov't found out.

Why are the ones on http://www.evolutionimports.net not street legal and what makes them say on their site that they are?
