launchs people

got a couple of questions. just picked up a regular evo (not an MR) and took it to the track immediately of course. im in arizona and its hot around here so cars run like crap, but how do you launch your cars. best i could get was a clutch smelling 2.3 60 foot. i tried dumping it and slipping it around 4-5500. it didnt spin at all it just wouldnt get up on the boost before the nose started dropping. i have never had any of my muscle cars run that crappy of 60 ft time.

the car is 100% stock 04 evo.

any suggestions?

thanks

Did you take it to Firebird? I did a couple of runs there after I picked up my Evo a couple months ago. My 60's were 2.012 and 2.12 which is lame. It definitely takes some getting used to, but now I'm a lot quicker. There was a guy there running a stock Evo who hit 1.8 and I think even a 1.6. His 1/4 time was in the low 13's. He's been draggin though for 20 years and a lot of his success comes with experience. The trick is getting your rev's into the boost before you take off.

A 6k slip netted me a 1.69 60 ft. I also burnt the **** outta the clutch though so its not worth it.

yeah i took it to firebird. some pos crashed and we had to wait 4ever. the usual ragged out drag car.

6500 dumps/slips huh? how long will a stock clutch last with that and will i break many thing if i put in a decent clutch? i really bought it to autox and not to drag race, but need to get the et down a little.

try it again and don't Burn it. practice by yourself. no immediate solid harshness. let it ease in, very quickly.

5500-6k RPM, feather the throttle, just when it starts to grab and pull the wheels slightly, then hammer it (full throttle/release clutch). This is far less damaging and can get 1.7x 60's on the stock clutch without burning the clutch.

u keep doing as ur doing, i give u about 3-5k on the stock clutch... if ur lucky. its not made for draging at a track, so expect to be putting up some money real soon for a whole new clutch.

also, if u put too strong of a clutch in, and hammer down, u run the risk of breaking t cases and diffs... ur talking around 2500 for each one when / if u break it, plus (minimum) of 500 bucks for a clutch.... hope u got some money saved..... and those prices arent installed prices either, lol

The only problem I experienced with my stock clutch was it's overall life. While it was working, it worked great. Don't drop the clutch, you'll run horrible times and kill the drivetrain. Getting the right slip is tricky (building boost without smoking the clutch), and practicing is hard on the clutch...but you'll know when you hit that sweet spot!
