Depends where you work... Id say working at a high end dealership is your best bet. Most my friends make anywhere from 15 to 25/hr. They work at Mercedes and have education from local school programs but the guys who get the 25/hr went to UTI for schooling.

I have a couple buddies who went to UTI......one is now a tech at Ford and he makes $14/hour, but his dealership goes on book time. I think he's getting a raise sometime soon and should be making $16-18/hour. The other one is a tech at MB making $20/hour starting and should soon be making about $25/hour.

My friend Ken went to a local 2Yr community college to be a mechanic and recieved all of his ASE certifications. Then he did a 12 month BMW specific program through BMW. This was 6 years ago and he is sitting pretty now. He is a Senior tech and makes between 60k-70K depending if he works overtime. With today's electronics the shade tree mechanic is done and it will only get worse.

If I could start over there is no doubt in my mind that is the route I would go. When your young you just want to make money when your older and you realize life is flying bye you want to be happy and enjoy your job.

I don't enjoy my job, but it's not hard and it pays well. Hindsight being what it is if you truly do love cars and love working on them go for it.

Good luck.

I've been hearing this for years and I disagree with it. It seems to me like ECU cars can be easier to work on--just pull a code and address the issue. Carburated cars required a bit more of an artform to get running right. On ECU cars, if you fix what the ECU is telling you to fix, you are good to go.

Ill have to disagree as well.....with modern day technology's increasing complicity, we need people who know what they're doing. My buddy at MB says that dealerships are getting more and more advanced in order to keep up with all the new tech.

I work at MB as a tech and I have been there for a little over 2 years and make about $50,000 a year. There are a couple guys where I work that make six figures. It all depends on the area you live in, whenever I go to training I meet people from all over the country and everyone makes totally different amounts. In cities where everything costs more, you get paid more. My dealership charges $94 an hour. In New York city, the labor rate is $135 an hour so those guys get paid a lot more.

On the topic of it being hard to work on cars yourself, I agree with this especially on Mercedes. On some of the new cars we have to disable to brake system using our computers in the shop before you change the brake pads because it has a high pressure pump that can activate at anytime and take your fingers right off if they are near the caliper pistons. Also non of the new cars even come with a trans dipstick and most dont come with oil dipsticks so we have ones that we use in the shop. These are just a few examples of the many things that would be hard to work on at your house.

Ive worked with techs that make 6 figures, but they have been around a few years, one made 36$/hr and the other 42/$ flat rate, so a 60 hour paycheck is pretty good living at that rate... i myself am young and dont have the experience and years behind me like them but im comfortable with $21/hr.
Its all about the $ though so if you want to make them in this industry you have to bust *** and work hard and make the right decisions at key points in your career.
