How do they know if your car is severely or regularly driven?

As for how to know what schedule to follow, that will be in the Warranty and Maintenance manual just like with every other Mitsubishi. The "regular" schedule for every current model only applies to people who do nothing but highway driving (almost nobody) and I don't see why the Evo will be any different.

Well I am glad that info will be in the manual. It sounds like Mitsubishi is quite thorough when writing that document for it's buyers.
But what I was getting at is that Mitsu cannot complain or deny warranty claims if a person is following a Mitsu published maintenance schedule....or within the greater of the two oil changing intervals.
No one can tell whether you drive on highways 99% of the time....or just 50% of the time. No service person could tell if I sit in traffic all day long, or if I scoot along on highways at 80mph for 2 hrs a day.
SC~ who also knows the stock tires on the evo could never be categorized as "racing slicks"

FYI - An engineer I work with used Mobil 1 in his F-150 (I know). He changed the filter every 3000 miles. After 15000 miles when ever he changed the filter he took an oil sample and sent it off for analysis. It's now been 80,000 miles and he has never changed his oil ever! He has only topped up to replace the oil lost from filter changes and samples. The samples still come back exceeding recommended specifications. Don't ask me why he would do this in the first place, must be the engineer in him.
That being said, I still don't have the heart to do something like this and change my oil every 3000 miles. Cheap peace of mind IMO.

Ya in a way even tho this car does take a alotof serious maintence its better than mitsu letting us do normal mantience and not telling us and watching our car die, randomly after 15k miles..... bike rack............mmmmmmmmmmm............ whatever floats his boat, his car his money, i recommend an outlander if youra biker.. ^_^........ i recommend an evo if you are an enthuasist, sorry for misspelling my keyboard has a wierd creature gunk in it.
So I see my "Dude" comment made some waves here. See it was used to mock the the thread starter for putting a bike rack on an Evo, which I think is absurd, but IMO. And by the way I'm 25 ****ing years old, haven't used the word "dude" in awhile and thought it would sound funny, hence the reason for using it. Makin the assumption that i'm 16 is just as freakin rediculous as putting the bike rack on the EVO
and by the way when I was in college (yeh I've gone to and graduated) my roomate's father worked for DuPont, and worked on a study testing the viscosity of motor oils and their lifetime. He actually found that even standard oil can last upto 30,000 miles, but the filter has to be changed every 5,000. I still don't quite understand how one can change the filter with out the oil leaking out, but hey you guys think i'm not even 16 years old so th only cars i've driven are on my PS2.
Hey shaddy,,,, ru getting one? do you have a deposit on one?
Then shut the hell up.
Its a Yakima roof rack u dumbass. because i like to bike, and i dont care what other asses think, just be careful who you laugh at u might get your *** kicked.

Bring it bud, talk is cheap in the forum. and yeh yo a$$, I am getting one, my deposit is in, an I don't feel the need to explain myself to you either. I made one comment about stupiod the bike rack and didn't expect the ******** response I got from you. P.S. - I'm in Philly, if ya ever get in town, shoot me a PM. I have no problem with, well lets say a formal introduction.
OK, I'll call this my bad. I started the whole pissing contest with silvr6 . After all we are just here to express our enthusiasm for this car. What one wants to do to their car is their choice. And, to be honest I wasn't thinking clear when I wrote that, and I am just glad some one is gonna actually get their Evo a little muddy. so can we lwet bygon be bygons here, or what.
Geez, hostility is at an all time high, right as the Evo is being released. I thought all forum members would turn into tree hugging hippies at this point. (lol, I know Ive been listening to alot more Phish and not bathing since I learned Im at the top of the list for a blue Evo, no money to buy it though) In all seriousness my point is this, lets simmer down, no one has anything to be angry about, the car this forums is based on is finally in the US! Lets all have a beer to that! Now does anyone have 30 grand I can borrow, or want to buy a mildly modded OZ for 30 grand? LOL

i would think you'd need to do the first handful of oil changes to get out the metal bits and pieces and shavings that seem to find their way into the oil on a new car.
i'm unfamiliar with the oil filter position and orientation on this engine, but on the hondas i've done, they're pointed slightly up on the backside, so you can kinda take 'em off w/o losing too much oil.
i'm sloppy, though.
