Who has their cost of ownership budgets?
We might (could be, maybe, looks good, fingers crossed) see EVO 8s' hitting dealers in the next 10 days. Please help me with my annual cost of ownership budget. Correct my cost estimates by re-arranging adding or deleting line items.
Given the following:
Drive 10000 miles/year
Drive fairly hard but not abusively. Zero Clutch Drops. Some high RPM clutch slips. Four trips to the track. Assume dealer parts and labor.
1. Oil/Filter Lube - 2500 miles - $50.00?
2. rotate tires - 5000 miles - $50.00?
2. new clutch - 7000 miles?- $900? (EVO VII weak)
3. new tires - 10,000 miles - $800?
4. regular dealer maintenance at 3K, 6K and 10K ? $80/per
5. Increased Insurance cost. Very age dependent. $500/year?
Lets do the math ...... hmmm add the 5 carry the 4 sum the subs...... Approximately $2700/year or $225/month for car ownership plus a pretty harsh ride. Dailey driver??
Just copy my list and edit it. Lets try and get an accurate estimate. Thanks!!

Change your oil and rotate you tires yourself. It'll just cost you $25 instead of $100
Maintance wise our car is not much different than the 1g or 2g eclipse gsx or subaru WRX. It's not that we have the highly maintance ACD/AYC. Just like any other awd car turbo cars not a big deal.

I got my stock clutch inmy talon to last 101,000 miles....and that was with some hard play....no clutch drops though! I don't understand what the hell you guys are talkin about all the time. 7,000....20,000...35,000....hell heven 50,000 miles till you replace the clutch. Respect the damn thing and it will last longer than you think. I am not saying baby it...cause thats not what it was made for....but respect it and it will lsat longer than 50,000 miles...I will put money on that.

Re: Who has their cost of ownership budgets?
1. Oil/Filter Lube - 2500 miles - $15 for the filter plus 4.7 litres of oil at $12 a litre = $75 x 4 per year = $300
2. rotate tires - I have never gotten more than 4,000 miles out of 4 tires, no idea
2. new clutch - 7000 miles? - disc about $300 and cover around $400 = $700 plus labour = what you said, around $900
3. new tires - 10,000 miles - $800? sounds about right for good road tires
4. regular dealer maintenance at 3K, 6K and 10K ? $80/per maybe a little more, ie $120 - 150?
5. Increased Insurance cost. Very age dependent. $500/year? - Cant comment, I live in France...

2. rotate tires - 5000 miles - $free - I am rarely willing to pay someone to do something that I can easily do myself
2. new clutch - 25000 miles?- replacement will be hd ACT - should handle all I can throw at it
3. new tires - 10,000 miles (seems low - I got almost 18k miles out of my MXX3s on my fd, and that's with some trips to the track) - $800? - probably go with some Khumo or other dry tire
4. regular dealer maintenance at 3K, 6K and 10K ? $80/per - dunno about this...
5. Increased Insurance cost. will go down for me. the Evo is replacing my Outback and RX7

the biggest hit to my pocket book regarding the Evo is going to be a 2nd set of wheels/tires next fall, the stereo, and the performance upgrades that I know I am going to want. Driving a stock Evo just isn't going to work very long for me I think.... I have to many friends with very fast cars....

Oil and Filter every 2500 -- Do it yourself!! should be $25 to $30 Depending on the sythetic oil you choose.
Rotate Tires -- Do you not own a floor jack? Rotate @ 10k too.
Clutch! If you can't get more than 50k out of a clutch then you really need to own an automatic. Hell I have over 100k on my AWD clutch. I understand the EVO may purposely have a soft clutch, so you adjust by not slipping it so badly.
Tires - Even the EVO's will last 20k. Com'mon they are not a race slick. Regardless, good tires will be about $800, but those won't last much beyond 20k especially if you are hard on them.
Dealer maint. - What's that??? Do it yourself! Unless you have something seriously wrong.
Insurance is going to vary, so I can't really say about it.
There you have it.
Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the reply. I will do most of the work, however, I chose to set the parameters for this thread as if the dealer did the work. (my thread na na na na.....

From what I am learning from UK owners, the cost of ownership for the EVO 8 is going to surprise a lot of people. A lot. It is not a GSX and 50k on an stock EVO clutch is very wishful thinking and unheard of in other parts of the world from what I have read.
Throw in a very harsh ride, "shabby shiek" interior and the EVO is a car only an enthusiast can love and I do. By the way, if I get a big CF wing can you call me Uncle Ben?

1. Oil/Filter Lube - 3500 miles - $50
2. rotate tires - 3500 miles - $125 (once - buy a jack and a good torque wrench and do it yourself)(just do this at the same time as an oil change, since the car will already be up in the air)
3. new clutch - 7000 miles?- not sure. Mileage will definately vary on how you shift.
4. new tires - 10,000 miles - $600-900 depending on choice of tire. The tires won't last more than 10-12k miles unless your idea of driving involves cruise control and the interstate. Also, you will *not* get 4 track days out of the OEM tires, period. If you do, let your grandma show you how to drive. If you're really serious about track time, do yourself a favor and get an extra set of wheels (watch Ebay) and put kumho or hoosier slicks on them.
5. regular dealer maintenance at 3K, 6K and 10K ? Not sure what you're getting at. If you do dealer service intervals at every 3500, you'd probably just get the pit pass thing. Otherwise, this is all stuff you can do easily - basically checking on wear items and fluids, and replacing as needed.
6. Increased Insurance cost. Very age dependent. Age and location dependant, as well as how ugly your driving record is. I'd guess the Evo would be about $1500/year for me (23, in Indiana, a fairly cheap state insurance wise).
Other expenses:
Brake Pads - probably 10k to 15k miles, $200 for replacement OEM or $300-400 for aftermarket hot-street pads. A track event will probably eat up a set of OEM pads, too.
Brake fluid - $12 every time you change your pads and before every track event. Throw in a set of speedbleeders ($30, give or take) and save yourself a lot of hassle.
Brake Rotors - some pads eat rotors. Not a cheap replacement either.
Gas - plan on getting 20 MPG, tops. It's really hard to not use all 271 of those ponies
You are absolutely correct. Within 3-6 months, there will be people selling their Evos as the car nickel and dimes them into the poor house. Do the math before you buy
