Engine attributes questions?

These questions come from a class I am currently taking. Since I own an EVO, I figured this would be a good place to get some feedback. Thanks for your responses.

What would you considered most important in an engine? Please list the following in the order of importance to you.
1. Weight
2. Volume
3. Fuel Economy
4. Reliability
5. Durability
6. Cost
7. Noise and Vibration
8. Performance
9. Service Requirements

Would you prefer more top speed or a lower 0 to 60?

Have you ever blown an engine? If so, how did you do it? Were you racing, tuning, etc.?

If you currently own a performace 4 cylinder engine:

A. How satisfied are you with the fuel economy?

1 = Too good! I would trade anything for more power.
2 = Good enough.
3 = Would like it to be better without sacrificing power.
4 = Would like it to be better even if it means a little sacrifice in power.

B. What is the current horsepower and fuel economy rating?

C. What is your ideal horsepower and fuel economy rating?

D. Is horsepower more important than torque?

Lower speed would be used more.

Nope, been very careful

A. 2

B. ~270whp, 20mpg

C. 400whp, 30mpg

D. More torque than HP anyday.

1. Performance-To each his own, but I am not a cruiser. I'm a flyer!!!
2. Reliability-2 and 3 are pretty much a tie in my book
3. Durability
4. Fuel Economy-With todays gas prices. This might end up being in top 3 soon.
5. Volume-Don't care.
6. Weight-This is important to me. I only drive well balanced cars.
7. Cost-Don't care.
8. Noise and Vibration-I like to hear the rpms of the engine.
9. Service Requirements-This is a given with any car, not important to me.

I don't care to go 200mph. I would rather get to 150 faster.

Yes. Shop kinked oil return line, turbo overheated from lack of proper cooling, blew seals, and sucked all the oil out of the engine. They replace both for free.

315whp Have no clue, maybe 18mpg. Stay off boost.

500whp on 93 pump+methanol. I would be happy if I got 10-12mpg.

I don't drive cars without both. 2.3l Stroker baby!!!

id rather have a car faster 0-60 than one that can do 200 besides a track where could i run it?
never blown an engine (knock on wood)
i came from a v8 jeep so the gas milage makes this thing a prius in comparison
all stock right now
500whp and 30mpg
torque more important than hp
sounds like a cool class what is it?

The class is just one of many for an engine design masters degree program. The instructors just wanted us to get some feedback on what people look for when purchasing higher performance vehicles.

8. Performance - no brainer here

9. Service Requirements - it's gotta be easy to work on. IMO one of the main advantages of the Evo over the STi

4. Reliability - isn't this synonymous with Durability? NEways, it's gotta last for at least a track day

5. Durability

3. Fuel Economy - yes I want to have my cake and eat it too

2. Volume - smaller is better IMO. I'll take a 2.0 liter that makes 500whp over a 7.0 liter that makes the same power any day

6. Cost - sure it's nice to be cheap, but not necessary

1. Weight - again, it's nice to have low weight, but an aluminum block does not necessarily respond well to forced induction (aka STi)

7. Noise and Vibration - not a concern at all

I prefer neither top speed nor acceleration - I want a wide/even power band. The top speed I can get with aerodynamics, the acceleration with gearing.

I've blown one engine ... my first car (a '74 Opel Manta), screwing around, beating the pi$$ out of it. Never blown one since.

A. Owning an Evo, I would definitely like my fuel economy to be better. The combination of gearing/lack of aerodynamics is killing my mpg, but that will be fixed soon.

B. Current HP/MPG: 290 whp / 26mpg (this will change shortly)

C. Optimal HP/MPG: unlimited whp / 40 mpg (IMO 30 mpg is not hard to do)

D. IMO a silly question, since HP is a function of torque. I'll take torque over HP all day long.
