with a manual your either in gear or your not.........its not rocking in higher gears because your road speed in compinsating for your lack of good shifting, please take my advice and go to a flat road and learn your clutch, then move to a slight grade unpopulated hill and so on until u dont rock it, also u dont want to learn the hard way on a hill if you coast back into someone cause u cant get moving forward its your fault, "driver doesnt have control of vehicle"..

yea this is a tough car for your first.. i'd say that! its just a lot of practice of "how to" with the car. AWD is also different on slipping the clutch and so forth since the drivetrain doesnt allow much room for error.

As many of us "evo owners" will tell you, the stock clutch doesnt seem to hold for long periods of time if you drive hard with it. Even if you know how to drive stick awesome. My stocker lasted me 24k miles and to some thats even a lot of miles to get out of it. My freinds got 13k on it. Learn how to drive it first, then learn how to enjoy the car in the way it was intended. They are lots of fun once you get the hang of it.

Just dont use the gas at all once in a flat parking lot(at night lol) and just slowly release the clutch till you feel it bite. Ease it and let it roll by itself.. then stop and try again. Do this until you get the feel of how far your foot comes off the floor before it bites. Also you may need to feather the gas pedal a bit before the clutch engages.. helping you not JERK back and forth.

I have experienced the "rock back and forth" issue before. But the reason it happened to me was because I was in first gear going over a bump and since the gas pedal is so touchy my foot went down a bit, then back up, that made the car jerk pretty good. My guess is that you did something similar, since especially in first gear the car gas is so incredibly touchy.

You need to learn how to drive your car, AWD are a little harder to learn how to drive on, as always practice makes perfect .... the rocking back and forth happens in lower gears, eg: 1st and 2nd, when one incorrectly releases the clutch. The burning smell make be because of several reasons, clutch, brake, or some of the chemicals burning off your exhaust ...

Ok, are you saying that if I switch to first, let go of the clutch, the car shouldn't die?

evo8ya is right its easy to get the evo moving just by modulating the clutch and giving no input from the gas pedal, but you have to be just right with it not to fast not to slow or you stall. The kid with the smell its probably your clutch, you should try to learn the car first and then beat on it lol

It is next to impossible to try and teach someone how to drive a clutch (especially this one) by simply typing what to do. Take thier advice and get to that flat parking lot and practice practice practice. Its so easy once you get it down that you'll wonder why you ever needed help. Its just getting there that is a bit frustrating at times. Then have fun with it!

when read the heading to this post i figured it was the smell of the sh_t in your pants cause the car is fast......

but now after reading through the posts...i am assuming it's your clutch.....practice practice practice.....and eventually it won't stink........if you drive it properly

I thought I was the only one experiencing this. I laugh everytime this happens to me.

More advise:

Go learn stick on someone else's car!

As far as the 1st gear issue. Once your SLOWLY release the clutch.. and its starts to move.. let go of the clutch and it wont stall

Thanks everyone for your help! I will probably do that tonight. So from all this, I'm guessing a good time to give it some gas is after you feel the "bite"?
