I know that it's a fairly common problem for some us that our cars consume a lot of oil. After just 400 miles since my last oil change I was down about 1/4 quart. No leaks from the drain plug, filter, etc. I do have an oil catch can and that's not really filling up either. I also know it is acceptable to consume as much as 1 qaurt per 1,000 miles. My question is: Does anybody know the quantity of oil required to move the oil level from the bottom slash on the dipstick to the top slash on the dipstick? I figured it to be around 1/2 quart. I just find this really weird and it could have been dangerous if I wasn't so obsessed with my car maintenance.

 

thats strange, I dont see any consumption between changes..

 

1 put a catch can in, 2. some of our cars use a quart every 2000 (<EDIT) mi others dont.. dont forget the more your on it, the more oil you will use, cause it turns into a gas when (blowby) your pushing the car hard..

 

I have never had to put only oil in my car as well.

 

03 with 20k ..... never adding oil even after a track session.... I beat the snot out of my car....lots of high speed road racing.

 

You might have a problem. I've never had to add oil and im going on 20k.

 

Any idea what this can be cause by? I'm surprised nobody has mentioned they've had the same problem yet. Maybe I should have the dealer check it out and do some tests.

 

You have a problem if you are loosing oil!

Are you using the Mobil 1 FS? If not stick to it!

 

I go 5k between oil changes and its always at the same level when I change it.

 

it could be... a bad break in period.

I got that off an article i read somewhere. it was posted on this forum. the article mentioned how crucial the breakin period was for the evo. depending on how it was broken in, your evo would guzzle oil or wont.

 

hmm...i also have a similar problem...
no leaks etc..
but i do have to top up my oil every so often(not much tho)....say monthly..
it's noticeable.

 

I never loose a drop...........maybe it has something to do with the mods.

 

I broke my engine in like a complete grandma. My car and I didn't even know we had a turbo and I went to about 1,200 before I slowly started to see what the car had. So break in is out of the question. Had about 12 miles when I bought it. Never used anything other than Mobile 1 10w-30 synthetic. So I guess I better get to the dealer and see what they tell me. I'm going to make an appointment for Thursday, my day off. I'm only slightly modded, so I'm just going to put the stock intake back on. We'll see what they say.

 

excessive idling will consume oil. throttle body is closed, high vacuum, oil gets used up. that might be your answer.

 

My car used a little under a quart in 4500 miles. I took it easy on the break in period as well. Every high-performance car i've owned has done the same.
