Screeching noise (Evo VIII MR) - please HELP!!

Hi,

Just come back from a little drive. The car (Evo VIII MR) has been absolutely perfect so far....I've done 6000 miles and had it from new.

Got to my drive and had to do a few manoevres to park it properly. While I was parking, I had my foot on the clutch and slowly feeding it out to make small adjustments to my parking. I was going backwards and forwards like this for about a minute. While doing this....a really weird screeching noise was coming from the front of the car. The only way I can describe it....sounded like when the fan belt needed changing in my old vw golf!

Now, I've had the usual groaning noise that a lot of people get when starting the car and pulling off slowly for the first time...this was completely different...very high pitched screeching.

I don't understand what this could be. Can it be the clutch. I have babied the clutch and have not launched once/ I don't ride on it either. Never taken it to a track or dragstrip. I do however live in London so there is a lot of stopping and starting which means I'm on the clutch more than I would be if it were not so busy. If it is from the clutch ....should I worry about it. I don't seem to be getting any slippage when the car is pulling through the gears.

If it isn't the clutch...what else could it be? Should I be worried?

Any help/advice is really appreciated.

Was the noise constant? I mean, do you hear the noise when you're engaging/disengaging the clutch? or do you hear it even when you're in neutral while the car is idling?

No it wasn't constant...when I had the clutch fully pressed it went away. Also when I had it in neutral, it also went away.

Yeah I'm using the advans but it did this even when I wasn't turning the wheel...i.e. wheel was perfectly centred but trying to go backwards and forwards.

Have the dealer check it out; that's what the warranty's for.

Yeah, your car is so new, it shouldn't be doing that. Have the dealer check it out man. It's not the PS pump either since you were going straight.

The problem with that is, the closest dealer that I would trust near my Evo is around 120 miles away. I guess what I'm really afraid of is...will I make it worse if I continue driving it. If it turns out to be the clutch...it will not be replaced under warranty.

your belt for your pump is prob loose, so when you turn the wheel to full lock it slows the pump making the belt squeel if its loose... have you checked that yet, since you know what a squelling belt sounds like...

I'll check it tomorrow although I'm not really sure what I'm looking for...I just know the sound. I'll do a bit more testing also just to give a few more details on the problem. Thanks for everyone's thoughts so far.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Yes. You're right, a loose belt will squeal. But I wasn't talking about the belt, I was thinking about the PS pump itself. A bad pump will squeal when the steering wheel is turning. By the way, he did mention he was going striaght if you read carefully on post #6.

I too have noticed this just recently on my 2005 MR. It's during low speed driving combined with tight turning OR just sitting parked with the car on and turning the steering wheel from lock to lock I get a slight squeeling noise like the power steering pump is potentially bad or the belt could be slipping.

I am going to make an appointment to take it into the dealership to have it looked at.
