DailyDriven: Soundproofing
Some of us drive our Evos every day and have some mods. I have a series of questions looking for experienced help and thought I'd start with this one.
I have a 3"TBE and would like it to be a bit quieter in the cabin. Futher, I will be upgrading the sound very soon and would like to enjoy my music - it's tough with how much the road noise and exhaust fill the cabin.
I've heard that dynomat-type products help really only with road noise and not the lower, boomier exhaust noise and that a carpet-pad type of insulation would help.
I know all of this will add weight but I'm not too worried about a few pounds - so don't flame me on that, please.
I was thinking of putting carpet padding in the floor of the trunk and under the rear seat. I would like to put dynomat over the wheel wells, around the speakers on the rear deck and perhaps in the doors. I'm unsure what to do along the firewall just yet.
One thought to insulate against both types of noise is to get carpet padding to size and cover it with the dynomat thus eliminating the lower frequency noises as well as the higher frequencies.
Any thoughts on which areas need what types of insulation?
Anyone with experience here and has specific, proven suggestions?
Thanks!

dynomat or brown bread or somthing like that works great. also helps your stereo sound better. do the trunk, its the best bang for the buck. if you want to do more do the door panels and you could even put it under the carpet. one of the many soundproofing companies even makes a spray on form tthats good for firewalls and wheels wells. i had my jeep dynomated for stereo reasons but it really helped out on roadnoise as well.
I have a full aftermarket exhaust (10.5, 3" o2 housing, 3" DP, high-flow cat, Helix cat-back) and also a full stereo system with 6 interior JL Audio speakers and a 10" JL W6 in the truck. Last weekend I installed a full DYNOMAT trunk kit. I did the floor and sides of the truck, and then took the rear seat out and did the floor under it. It did add a LITTLE weight to the car, but there is a HUGE difference. The exhaust is definately quieter inside the car and the sub hits a lot harder. Instead of picking up a bunch of dynomat, it's cheaper to just spend the $100 and get the entire trunk kit.
Buy a different exhaust!!!
sorry, I couldn't resist, mine is quiet as stock unless I'm WOT. But Dynamat does a great job of keeping a lot of outside noises out... sadly (and happily, for music purposes) it does a good job of keeping a lot of inside noises in.

I have done this to my Evo. The trick is, as was said, to use a combination of damping material and sound barriers. I used b-quiet ultimate and , Vcomp from b-quiet.com. The ultimate was applied to the trunk panels. The Vcomp was laid down under the carpet beneath the seats and behind the rear seatback. It really quieted down road noise. Exhaust noise was silenced some but not a whole lot. One thing you might want to keep in mind, if you are planning on having a sub in the trunk, is that the rear seatback sound barrier will kill a lot of the output of the sub.
I am going to redo my setup, not really sure which way to go yet. Either keep the rear seatback barrier, and do 2 small IB subs off the rear deck; or if I keep my rear sub, line the trunk with vcomp.
It really helps with road noise, and some with exhaust noise, but if you are looking at mainly exhaust noise, I agree with UT Evo, different exhaust, a cutout, or some sort of variable silencer.

Will have sub in trunk so blocking that at the seatback's not an option.
I'll try a more in-depth search of the forums in case someone's done more of this. Thanks for the input and keep it coming!

I've been thinking about this for a while. Tell us how it goes.
When it was time to change my tires I got the pirelli p zero M+S, and these babies are SILENT, they are nothing compared to the performance of the advans though.

i have installed the bulk kits before....Dynomat doesnt really block anything u take the carpet up and lay it on the metal and put the carpet back over and u dont even see it or know its there(not counting its quieter)....all u really need is a hair dryer, a razor blade,a dynomat roller (but i jus used a fiberglass spreader) and i believe thats it....and it comes with a little bit of instructions too......
