Thumbs down Got a quote today

Well I went to a local tuning shop and just out of curiousity I asked how much they would charge to change my cams and headstuds. I have GSC's and ARP's waiting to go in, nothing to fancy. Well I about died when they said it would be $1050.00!!! WTF!!! Does this sound alittle high to anyone other than me. I guess I'm going to do them myself now. Does anyone know where a good write up on cam installation is? I found one for the headstuds by the link in the How To section for the cam install won't work for me. I'm fairly mechanically inclined so I'm not worried about doing it myself but any help or guidance would be nice. Thanks.

Head studs cost me 95 bucks for the install at RRE. I bet the shop that quoted you that does worse work.

Harmon Motive here in Torrance seems to be kinda pricey. Their perogative as I took my business elsewhere. Thanks RRE and TT

Thats awful.. im having a complete timing belt change, balancer belt, acc belt which involves alot more then doing the cams.. removing cam gears, installing cams, injectors, new brake, pads, SS lines, re tuned on the mustang dyno for under $600.

Sometimes I hate living in a hole with no decent shops around.

I think cams and head studs book out at around 6.5 hours, I was quoted $650 here in high price SoCal from a shop with a good rep.

I had 264/272 combo and ARP head studs installed and it took 3 hours with tech breaks and engine cool down before they started.

thats what i was going to say. Probably removing the head. Ask them how much for cams alone and see what they say. Its less than a 3hr job.

Don't do it man! If you have the right tools, you can have it done in a couple hours tops.
